HORRIBLE HUCK; PUSHING POPULIST PAP
The New York Post ^ | December 3, 2007 | George Will

Posted on 12/03/2007 10:04:42 AM PST by Eric Blair 2084

snip

On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee's candidacy rests on serial non sequiturs: I am a Christian, therefore I am a conservative, therefore whatever I have done or propose to do with "compassionate," meaning enlarged, government is conservatism. And by the way, anything I denote as a "moral" issue is beyond debate other than by the uncaring forces of greed.

His is a moralist's version of the intellectual vanity once ascribed to Oxford's Benjamin Jowett:

My name is Jowett

Of Balliol College;

If I don't know it,

It is not knowledge.

Many Iowans think it would be wise to nominate a candidate who, when the Republicans were asked during a debate to raise their hands if they do not believe in evolution, raised his. But, then, Huckabee believes America can be energy independent in 10 years, so he has peculiar views about more than paleontology.

Huckabee combines pure moralism with incoherent populism: He wants Washington to impose a nationwide ban on smoking in public, show more solicitude for Americans of modest means and impose more protectionism, thereby raising the cost of living for Americans of modest means.

Although Huckabee is considered affable, two subliminal but clear enough premises of his Iowa attack on Mitt Romney are unpleasant: The almost 6 million American Mormons who consider themselves Christians are mistaken about that. And - 55 million non-Christian Americans should take note - America must have a Christian president.

snip

If Huckabee succeeds in derailing Romney's campaign by raising a religious test for presidential eligibility, that will be clarifying: In one particular, America was more enlightened a century ago.

At least Romney had a conversion. What he needs to remember is that you don’t just get baptized or born again as a Christian and then become Pope.

You’re 100% correct. My point, and Will’s, is that his SUPPORTERS are basically taking the approach that the “most Christian” guy is always the best candidate and either LIKE his socialism, don’t care about it, or don’t know about it.

Then, in a clear reference to Huckabee, Rush said that the Drive-by Media will build up the Republican candidate who THEY think is going to be the easiest to defeat in the general election. Then once the candidates are nominated, they will start to tear down the very same GOP candiate that they praised during the primaries.................

Oh, we know. We got a copy of the secret Memo that the MSM has been circulating around...

MEMO

RE: Mike Huckabee
DATE: November 29, 2007

Dear Bible Thumping toothless rednecks,

Please remember to vote for the tax raising, environmentalist wacko, nanny state sheeple controlling, smoker banning, open border third world America killing, Socialist candidate we tell you to vote for in the primary....Mike Huckabee.

He is pro life and he talks about Jesus. That should be good enough for you.

DO NOT VOTE FOR REAL CONSERVATIVES LIKE FRED THOMPSON OR DUNCAN HUNTER. THAT WOULD DERAIL OUR QUEST TO TURN AMERICA INTO A THIRD WORLD SOCIALIST STATE.

Thank you,

The Elitist left wing media

“But why does a Rudy teammate like Will, bash Huckabee. Of course George Will is right on this one but....”

George Will would be happy with any liberal squish RINO.

Rooty and Mutt both fit his choice.

Duncan Hunter doesn’t need to constantly prove his Conservatism because it has been obvious throughout his political career through his actions while the so called “top tier” candidates keep trying to prove with words only their sudden “Conservatism” to each other and the world.

Huckabee has a poor track record on issues that should be among the most important to conservatives and patriots. He would be unable to clearly differentiate himself from FRudy McRomney on the important issues of growth of government and illegal immigration.

The shame is that one of the two candidates who offer a true conservative, small government platform - Tom Tancredo or Duncan Hunter - couldn’t have been the one to place second in the Iowa straw poll and be propelled to the point that Huckabee is now in.

Regardless of who the GOP candidate is in November, it’s looking like conservative voters are going to be in for another disappointment.

FRudy McRomnee offer nanny state, big government, open border amnesty with a pinch of socialized health care, and conservatives and patriots are looking at another four or eight years of watching the country they love follow the path of every once-great nation.

Hunter will POTUS one day. He just needs some national exposure as a Guv or VP. Hard to go from the House to the White House.

Romney’s conversion may be insincere, but at least he’s claiming to have one. The Huckster is proudly liberal.

You include Fred in that list. Why?

“why does George Will go out of his way to flame Huckabee??????”

George Will is his own man. I don’t think the circumlocution of pairing Huck and Rudy enters into it.
Maybe he likes Rudy because they are both Yankees fans, and as an elite and conservative intellectual, Rudy’s metro-conservatism hits his vibes better than a southern populist.

Huck and Rudy are like dipolar oppositions in the GOP big tent. It’s a “potassium chloride” ticket, one the social liberal security/crime-con, the other the tax-and-spend-and-compassionate-on-crime social conservative.

Be that as it may, I wouldn’t want to be on the end of Will’s rapier pen.

Excellent points. Truthfully, I fear for the boozers, they won’t stand a chance against the Huckster!

It sounds like George Will has no plans ever to seek the presidency of Bryan College in Dayton, TN (named for Wiliam Jennings Bryan).

I understand your confusion. This is one of the most confusing, irritating primaries I’ve ever witnessed.

Maybe your right. Maybe Will just introduced Rudy at CPAC and wrote some nice things about him but is not actively part of the campaign.

Maybe there is no conspiracy and it is what it is and Will is just writing what he thinks. So the conspiracy is...there is no conspiracy but they want us to think there is a conspiracy. Geez, I need some professional help :-)

Not only was Abraham Lincoln not the favorite as GOP nominee when the 1860 GOP Convention began (William Seward was the favorite) but he hadn't held political office for eleven years since his one term as U.S. Representative ended in 1849. He also failed twice to become a U.S. Senator.

It was really confusing until it finally sunk into my thick head that there are only 3 conservatives running and only one polling in double digits, Fred. I’ve been mailing him cases of Red Bull in lieu of cash contributions.

Maybe you can answer this question because somebody else brought it up...who since Lincoln went from the House to the WH?
