The private funding for the Superhighway is coming from a Spanish company which will turn the road(s) into toll roads to pay for it. Just like most toll road in Texas are not owned but the state but are owned by foreign companies.

With regards to the spanish construction company, you would have to dig, but my little understanding on the matter is Rudy’s law firm represented the company on its bid win to build the highway. Hence, no need for legislation.

Great news about these highways, is it should bring in more illegal immigrants into the US. So ALL candidates should be saying something about it but as indicated, RP, Hunter and Tancredo are the only ones who have mentioned this.

I am just happy that Bush didn’t have us seeing him in the Rose Garden signing the amnesty bill some time ago. Easier to push this through the Department of Commerce than to have legislation crafted and voted down by the people.

You'll have to forgive me my ignorance on the issue- I have kept up with it tangentially, and I have been uncomfortable with NAFTA for some years now, but my main opposition to the issue rises directly out of the illegal immigration fiasco.

I probably would have left well enough alone, content to leave the issue to those more informed than myself, but for one question:

What possible scenario would cause the Republican leadership to so boldly go forward with amnesty despite what one could expect from their base supporters?

What reason would cause them to irrevocably tilt the table to the Democrats by minting 20m new Dem voting immigrants?

What profit is in leaving the border wide open with it's obvious security concerns falling on the deaf ears of supposed war-hawk Republicans?

Ok, so it isn't really one question (no, really it is... a simple "WHY?" would do), but you get my drift...

The only things I could come up with to explain the disparity are drug money or NAFTA money, and one can envision those two being the same...

So... The only logical action is to oppose damn well anything that tries to keep that border open, including NAFTA and FREE TRADE in the process... And I will happily subscribe to any dang theory, no matter how much tinfoil I must wear, until and unless someone can answer the questions and restore my trust in government (not gonna happen).

That's exactly correct.

The spanish company is Cintras. Giuliani's company represents their interests.

Cintras is buying the rights to toll roads from Texas to Indiana and investing in linking them up and expanding their capabilities.

The states are selling their own sovreignty over these arteries for short-term, budget-balancing reasons and in the process handing the next century of toll revenues (and control of use) to Spain.
