LA TIMES ^ | 30 Nov 07 | Stephen Braun

The GOP presidential candidate says U.S. sovereignty is at risk. Highway and trade officials and transportation consultants say there are no plans for such a project.

WASHINGTON -- The man from Arlington, Texas, could barely contain his smirk as he looked into a computer video camera to pose a question of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

“Run Paul is saving the constitution and our Republic from a non-existent road, not funded, not planned, and not under consideration. We’re soo lucky.”

I’m going to the next Paul event, I want to sell my giraffe whistle to them, it keeps giraffe away, and I can prove it.

AFAIR, the road is privately funded.

There is nothing private about eminent domain seizures.

The current fight should be against letting a million Mexican truckers into the US. If its stopped there, there would be no need to build or expand N-S highways (written in english and spanish).

It sounds like a good market place to me.

You may be right, but I still don’t see how this article is supossed to “help” Hunter.

Those who want to label a person a kook for opposing a NAFTA superhighway have to recognize the fact that there are a number of Republicans who will be smeared with that brush.

And I sure don’t want to hear C.W. McCall’s song “Convoy” in Spanish. ;-) Kiddin’.

Since I’m not the one who brought up the specter of Martian body-snatching, I’m happy to leave the issue to you.

Yah, but if a giraffe walks up during my pitch, then I am screw*d.

Well, that’s gratitude. I hand your candidate a perfectly good issue - Martian body snatching - and you get snippy. So be it.

Has Ward Churchill joined the “Ron Paul Revolution” team as foreign and Native American affairs advisor yet? How about David Duke weighing in on civil rights and racial purity?

Maybe someone should introduce legislation against Martian body-snatching and see who all co-signs it.

Hopefully they'll wait and introduce it *after* the Martians snatch YOU up.

Ward Churchill is to Indians and Indian affairs what Run Paul is to American sovereignty. Paul, in fairness, would never pick David Duke to help him on Civil Rights. But many of Duke’s and Run Paul’s supporters will be disappointed to learn that.

Westlander,

I’m not opposed to Hunter — and maybe I’m misinterpreting what you meant.

But I’m still wondering how this article helps Hunter, when it notes that Hunter himself signed “a resolution expressing opposition to a NAFTA superhighway.”

The private funding for the Superhighway is coming from a Spanish company which will turn the road(s) into toll roads to pay for it. Just like most toll road in Texas are not owned but the state but are owned by foreign companies.

With regards to the spanish construction company, you would have to dig, but my little understanding on the matter is Rudy’s law firm represented the company on its bid win to build the highway. Hence, no need for legislation.

Great news about these highways, is it should bring in more illegal immigrants into the US. So ALL candidates should be saying something about it but as indicated, RP, Hunter and Tancredo are the only ones who have mentioned this.

I am just happy that Bush didn’t have us seeing him in the Rose Garden signing the amnesty bill some time ago. Easier to push this through the Department of Commerce than to have legislation crafted and voted down by the people.

Do you know if Texas funded the road?

AFAIR, the road is privately funded.

Not exactly - the eminent domain, the tolls, the limiting of alternate roads, and so on make it complicated. There are quite a few threads about it.
