SAN DIEGO -- The discovery of a suspicious-looking object in a medical school building at the University of California, San Diego campus prompted the evacuation of several hundred students and faculty members Wednesday while a bomb squad investigated. The discovery at the La Jolla university campus was reported in the late morning, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Police cleared everyone out of eight buildings and called in an arson/explosives team to determine if the object might be anything hazardous, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said. Authorities also shut down a stretch of Gilman Drive, part of which extends onto the campus from the neighborhood to the south. As of the 1 p.m. Wednesday, it was still unclear if the object was hazardous.
