I like to ask myself, “What’s in it for me?”. I cannot imagine anything good coming from a police search of my car. I’m confident that my behavior and my possessions are all completely legal — still, how can I benefit from a police search? The answer is clear: I can’t. Therefore: No warrant, no search.

I wouldn't even ask myself that question. I'd ask the police officer. If he can give me a good reason, I'll submit to the search. If not, no search.

I'm a white-haired ole great granny - and that would be my take...I wouldn't give them a chance to plant something that would boost their career with a 'bust'

LOL! I agree with you. After watching many episodes of COPs on TV, if someone refuses a search, they bring in the K-9 unit, which can add another hour+ to your travel plans.

You mean like the cop finding a roach under the back seat that belonged to the previous owner and/or friends of the previous owner? It could happen...

if you allow a search, you allow police to find anything they can to make the arrest... even if it is planted... the question is, will the police officer submit to a search before you allow him to search your car... he probably would not.

The police can pretty much disassemble the interior of your car. You can enjoy putting the seats and liner back in while parked beside the road.

“I cannot imagine anything good coming from a police search of my car.”

Right on, brother. Years ago I was cleaning out the back seat of my car and I found a mummified joint. I have never partaken of the stuff; the offending doobie had been dropped by one of my nogoodnik pals.

Imagine what would have happened if I had been stopped and had consented to a search...I could have lost my car and a lot more.
