Thompson attacks Fox News
The Politico ^ | November 25, 2007 | Mike Allen

Fred Thompson attacked Fox News on Sunday for what he called a "constant mantra" that his floundering campaign for president is troubled, and he accused the network of skewing things against him.

Thompson certainly isn't the first politician to make that accusation, but he's the first high-profile Republican to do so.

The assertion was arresting because Fox News was frequently Thompson's forum of choice when he was contemplating a campaign and as he tried to find his footing after he announced.

Where did Thompson do it? On "Fox News Sunday," in a heated exchange with host Chris Wallace, who played clips of Fox commentators saying his campaign had been a disappointment.

"It's a lot of the same kind of stuff that I heard when I first ran for office, when I was 20 points down. And fortunately, I wound up 20 points ahead on election night," Thompson said.

"This has been a constant mantra of Fox, to tell you the truth. And I saw the promo ... for this show, and it was kind of featuring the New Hampshire poll. Let's put things in context a little bit, to start with."

Thompson was referring to a CNN/WMUR poll that showed his support in the Granite State had collapsed to 4 percent, putting him in sixth place among the Republican presidential hopefuls.

Referring to Fox commentators, Thompson said: "From Day One, they said I got in too late, I couldn't do it ... wouldn't raise enough money, and that sort of thing. And that's their opinion. They're entitled to their opinion. But that doesn't seem to be shared by the cross section of American people. If you look at the national polls, you'll see that I'm running second and have been running second for a long time."

The latest Real Clear Politics average of national polls does have the former Tennessee senator in second place, far behind former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and slightly ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"They're entitled to their opinion," Thompson continued. "But for you to highlight nothing but the negative in terms of these polls, and then put on your own guys, who have been predicting for four months, really, that I couldn't do it, you know, kind of skews things a little bit."

In April, when Thompson wanted to reveal that he had battled lymphoma, now in remission, he chose Fox anchor Neil Cavuto. Last month, when his wife, Jeri, was being criticized in the press, the two of them went on Fox's "Hannity & Colmes" for a respectful joint interview.

Now, though, he's none too happy with Fox. Here's a bit more of the exchange between host and candidate:

WALLACE: Do you know anybody who thinks you've run a great campaign, sir?

THOMPSON: It's not for me to come here and try to convince you that somebody else thinks that I've run a great campaign.

WALLACE: Well, but that's why I ...

THOMPSON: I'm talking about — no, let me ask you ...

WALLACE: ... I'm just asking you the question.

THOMPSON: When you get past New Hampshire and look at some of these other states — states that I'm leading in in the South, for example — and straw polls that I've won, endorsements that I've got — I've got more endorsements in the state of Georgia than all the other candidates put together. So I understand the game of buildup and I understand the game of takedown. And we all go through it. And I'm perfectly willing for you to do that with regard to me as you do the other candidates.

WALLACE: I was going to say, senator...

THOMPSON: But you have the right to put in your one side, and put in the Fox side, and I have the right to respond to it. And thankfully, you've given me that opportunity.

WALLACE: I was going to say, senator, I'm glad I asked the question, because I got a heck of an answer.

I watch FNS EVERY Sunday and Chris frequently does this, no matter if he is interviewing a lib or a conservative. Although I loved Tony Snow on FNS, I have been pleasantly surprised at how much I like Chris Wallace. He looks quite a bit like his father, but he is decidedly less liberal than Mike is. If you watched every Sunday instead of just when he has a guest you particularly like, you would pick up on this for yourself. I make myself suffer through Hillary, Nancy, Chuckie, and even worse to stay informed. In order to live up to their "Fair and Balanced" reputation, FOX has to ask tough questions of both sides. Fred may have intentionally overreacted a little in order to show that he does have some "fire in his belly" and is serious about his desire to be POTUS.

If the Freepers think that FOX has "gone over to the other side", spend two minutes (or less) watching ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, PBS, etc. I think that some of the FOX commentators may have a "soft spot" for Rudy simply because of his actions during 9-11. I think "Campaign Carl" does try his best to be impartial, but, if his wife is really a part of Hillary's campaign, he should either disclose that or not report on her campaign. Nina Easton, who fills in for Myra from time to time on SRWBH, always mentions that her husband works for a Republican (Romney, I think) if his name comes up in the discussion.

As luck would have it, I just now saw the clips that Chris showed today. (I DVRed the show while I was at SS and church.) The one by Charles Krauthammer is obviously wrong. He is a brilliant man, but I think that he has been relying on what the MSM has reported about Fred's ideas rather than researching them for himself. IMO, Fred has outlined more detailed plans than any other candidate, Democrat or Republican, in the race.

This is apparently news to everyone, but Fox News is not the media arm of the Republican party.

No, they are just the media arm of the Teddy Kennedy Wing of the Republican Party. As for the rest of us Republicans, we have no voice in the whoredom commonly referred to as the MSM, and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I just watched FoxNews Sunday for a second time and was quite impressed with the “fire in his belly” for his positions. I belive he had to fight to make every point he wanted to make and Chris seemed to want to negate any success in the campaign.

I have to agree that FoxNews commentators have certainly made up their minds the FRED will never get the nomination. If you have watched FoxNews for long, you will know that these commentators have certainly been wrong in the past and they are wrong this time. The Weekly Standard wrote a glowing article on FRED’s proposals in Social Security, Immigration, Expansion of the Military, and now Economic reforms. He has set the standard by which the other candidates should be forced to meet.

I just want to be there when they are forced to eat crow! FRED THOMPSON will be our candidate.

I watched the show this morning, and I didn’t blame Mr. Thompson one bit for firing back at Wallace and Fox.

Fox has morphed into just another run of the mill network, not a true voice for even handed news...how many times have they had opportunities to ask pertinent questions of people in the news, and let them off with puff ball questions?

Fox was pretty darned good when they started out, and I, like a lot of others became hooked on it...but as the years have gone by they have become not much more than a tabloid network...spending hour upon hour covering so called celebrity stupidity etc.

And this morning, for them to choose to show a clip of good old boy Fred Barnes criticizing Mr. Thompson...well in my opinion that was the last straw...Mr.Barnes has gotten .....well, I can’t come up with a word to describe the change in his personality over the past couple of years...maybe writing his book about Pres. Bush, and coming to the President’s defense over the past couple years has taken its toll...I just know he is no longer the man I used to enjoy watching and listening to.

I can’t imagine this will hurt the Thompson campaign or turn off his supporters..in my mind it may have been a very good thing....and by the way, no I’ve not decided who I am backing in the next election....

“if nominated, is not elected.

Period.”

so you would vote for Hillary? Because that couldn’t mean anything else.

I have resolved to proudly vote AGAINST Rudy Giuliani every chance I get. If Rudy gets nominated, the GOP will be destroyed. The GOP might very well finisth third.

So, if Rudy is nominated, will you pledge to support a third party candidate so that we can be united to defeat Hillary?
