Family calls mistaken death of son 'a miracle'(Organ donation movement takes a hit)

OKLAHOMA CITY -- What may have been a mistake at a Texas hospital is being called a miracle by the parents of a Frederick man who was critically injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident.

For more than six hours on Monday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol classified Zack Dunlap as the state's 610th motor vehicle fatality of the year.

Troopers removed Dunlap's name from the list the same day after learning he showed signs of life shortly before his organs were to be harvested for transplant.

Dunlap was hurt about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday while riding his four-wheeler on a Tillman County road less than a mile west of Davidson with a friend. His vehicle hit the rear of Colton Gains' four-wheeler, causing Dunlap's ATV to spin 180 degrees and throwing him off, according to the patrol's report.

Dunlap, 21, was flown to United Regional Healthcare System in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he was placed on life support.

Doctors pronounced him dead at 11:10 a.m. Monday, said trooper Betsy Randolph, a patrol spokeswoman.

However, "He's alive," Randolph said after speaking with hospital officials late Monday.

As a worker was removing tubes from Dunlap's body in preparation for medical personnel to remove his organs, Dunlap reached out and touched a nurse's arm, Randolph said.

Your faith is inspiring. I am with you 100%. As for the ungrateful, you would probably be disgusted by the general ungratefulness of our society in general. As a FF/Paramedic I spend my life taking care of many that make stupid mistakes. (think DUI but there are so many stupid things you would never believe them) If I wanted gratefulness in return, I would be one very depressed guy.

I once risked my life to save a drunk guy from a car that was overcome with major flooding. I broke my arm, but still got him to safety. After we got to shore, he said he “didn’t want no spic mexican taking care of him” and asked for someone else. Things like this happen all the time. I have learned to make no judgement, but to help all who need it, deserving or not, grateful or not. I don’t know why they are like they are, I just do my best to help everyone. Partially because my job requires it, and partially because it is the only way I can look myself in the mirror.

I am sure I have been taken advantage of from time to time. I would rather that, than making a misjudgement that costs someone their life.

They save a lot of lives. Yes. And if you go to China you can get an exact match quickly and at relatively low cost. And you don’t have to bother with the morality of killing a comatose person in order to get fresh organs. Donors in China are not comatose and they are officially worthless to society.

“I’m a registered organ donor and I really don’t lay awake at night worrying that some ghoul with a scalpel is going to mistake my REM sleep for brain death.”

How do you know your organs are not under surveillance right now?

first, they start tracking your buying habits through your local grocery store and debit card.

Then, you start being flooding with spam and mail regarding nutritional info, and fitness center discounts.

Then, an innocuous stranger mentions to your wife that it looks like you’ve gained weight, and she happens to pass on this observation too.

Then, your kids teachers tell them to ask you how many beers you drink a night. You feel guilty and cut back drastically.

Finally, it appears that someone is messing with the brake line on your car, and your hot water tank pilot light keeps going out, and in the morning you find catnip smeared on your face in the morning with fur stuck to your lips.

That is your opinion and you are freee to NOT impose it on other people.

There are SERIOUS vulture issues and this story is just another example in a loooooong line of organ harvesting abuse.

How many people who could have been saved were pronounced dead prematurly? This story would suggest more than one too many. This boy was VERY lucky he could move. If he had been alive but could not move he would be dead not by an accident, but it would be a death by doctor who was more interested in harvesting rather than saving lives.

Fortunatly matters of medical conscience are still not subject to rule by dictator.

Actually it is the truth. Doctors save many lives. It is routine. Organ harvesting is a special operation.

Don’t think you are being sarcastic.

Look at the woman who was refused immigration to New Zeland because she was too fat and a potential burden to their socialized medical system.

Consider, how the left has tried to make EVERYTHING a health issue. The environwackos use children to blackmail guilt in PSAs. Perhaps we will have laws requiring prohibition or rationing of red meat in order to protect the organ harvest pool.

after all, its for the children...

There isn’t really a way to determine what happened in this case. They don’t really state what was done before pronouncing him brain dead. Possibly protocols weren’t followed because of some mistake. If this is true, those involved will likely lose their jobs, and they should.

From time to time there are some medically inexplicable occurances. That is also a possibility, but we will probably never know what really happened. The details of his condition and prognosis are very vague. It is hard to tell whether he is expected to recover or not. Although, I truly hope that he does. I have seen plenty of young boys who were not so lucky, and it is truly tragic to lose someone so young.

I don’t know anything about China, and this has nothing to do with their very unfortunate way of governing.

Here in the US, there are many laws and specific protocols to prevent organs from being sold, or harvested from donors who are not officially brain dead. It saves thousands of lives, and gives many families a way to make sense out of tragedy. I assure you that doctors are not paid extra for organs, or given special recognition. They save lives and they want to save lives. Losing a patient is a terrible experience, for anyone involved, even if you know that you have done everything you can. It stays with you for a long time, especially when it someone so young.

Please do not continue to discourage organ donation in this country because of your perception of what could happen or what happens in China. Lives are saved every day by organ donation. Being a potential organ donor is something to be proud of, not scared of.

Or they could just show up one day, and say "we're here for your liver."

“those involved will likely lose their jobs, and they should.’

or maybe they should give up a kidney.

“Being a potential organ donor is something to be proud of, not scared of.”

Sure. But lets publicly state the list protocol on who would typically get what, and not what is market driven. Besides, how many illegals have gotten organs? Are they eligible for organs? Maybe that’s why we want our brown friends down south to get a driver’s license so that we can continue to drink margaritas with a new and improved liver. “Ariba Ariba”

Yes, if you can save someone’s life, that’s good.

Life is nothing if not complicated. I have doctors at the moment whom I know I can trust. But if you go off the road and into the emergency room maybe in some other town, or get a doctor on duty whom you don’t know, then you are in some danger.

There are at least some doctors out there who might cut corners in order to get an organ when they want one, just as there are some doctors out there willing to practice abortion or to euthanize a patient who still has a chance of recovery. If nothing else, organ donation complicates the medical profession and has a downside as well as an upside.

In this case, a family came within a couple of minutes of losing their son because a doctor was in a hurry to harvest his organs.

I usually enjoy a few fruitloops but these people surprise me.

I am slowly letting go of this misperception I have of conservatives as intelligent and thoughtful. I always thought that it was democrats that were overemotional and conspiracy theorists, but apparantly there are plenty of those to go around. Not taking away from the few rational individuals that have posted, and for whom I am very grateful.

How do you know your organs are not under surveillance right now?

Well my organs could very well be under surveillance right now and I really hope “they” enjoy the show. Back in the day… maybe…but now days? I’m a 46 year old woman and things just don’t hang out in the same places they once did if you get my drift.

first, they start tracking your buying habits through your local grocery store and debit card.

And aren’t “they” are going to be really confused by my grocery list: low fat organic milk, low fat organic yogurt, a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, skinless boneless chicken breasts, a big thick cut of prime Angus T-bone steak, a box of Mac and Cheese, a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and a bag of Doritos. Hey a girl’s gotta try but then a gal’s gotta do what a gal needs to do.

Then, you start being flooding with spam and mail regarding nutritional info, and fitness center discounts.

You mean if I get off the organ donor’s list that will stop spam emails? Count me in. Heck, what is the potential to save another human life in comparison to the annoyance of bogus stock tips and penile enlargement?

Then, an innocuous stranger mentions to your wife that it looks like you’ve gained weight, and she happens to pass on this observation too.

What part of Caramelgal didn’t you get? I don’t live in Massachusetts and I don’t have a “wife”. I do have an ex-husband however and BTW he is not my medical power of attorney.

Then, your kids teachers tell them to ask you how many beers you drink a night. You feel guilty and cut back drastically.

I have nothing to feel guilty about… not anymore…but there was a time…well let’s just say my liver is doing much better now but I still imagine that someone will open me up someday, take one look at my liver and say “ewe”.

Finally, it appears that someone is messing with the brake line on your car, and your hot water tank pilot light keeps going out, and in the morning you find catnip smeared on your face in the morning with fur stuck to your lips.

I am a 46 year old single woman who lives alone with 3 cats. Waking up and finding catnip smeared on my face in the morning with fur stuck to my lips is just called “morning”.
