Read Jesse Benton’s response, but I missed the article that Charen wrote to set of the controversy. Do you have that link?

How kind of NR to allow Mr. Benton to deny the obvious truth that paleoPaulie, his employer, is a kook and the looniest tune to run for POTUS in any of our lifetimes. BTW, that would be the same Barry Goldwater who took his daughter to the abortion mill personally and told the public that anyone who did not like that could kiss that portion of his anatomy upon which he customarily sat. The same Barry Goldwater who had no problems with the practicing homosexuality of one or more descendants. The same Barry Goldwater who, despite Ronaldus Maximus’s support for his forlorn candidacy, stabbed Reagan on many occasions before BMG finally retired. Welcome to the fantasy world of libertoonians posing as conservatives.

(“kook,” as I’m sure you remember, was the attack word of choice used by critics of Barry Goldwater)

Uh huh. And is the current favorite of critics of Dennis Kookcinich.

What's your point?

Yes, Ron appears on the Alex Jones radio program. But you know who else talks to Alex Jones? People like Judge Anthony Napolitano. Guess who hosts Alex Jones? FOX’s John Gibson and National Public Radio.

Note to self: Don't vote for Anthony Napoitano or John Gibson if they ever run for President.

Mona Charen is a typical neocon snake. If you removed unfounded insinuations of Nazism and anti-Semitism from neocon commentary, there would be very little left. The notion that Ron Paul, one of four congressmen to endorse Reagan over Ford in 1976 and a long-time opponent of big government, is in some sense sympathetic to Nazis is a smear, pure and simple, and neocon kookery of the highest order.

Dr. Paul’s commitment to principle is second to none, so to attack him, Charen twists the understanding of what a presidential pardon really is. A pardon is a constitutional check by the executive branch on the judiciary to protect against cruel or unusual punishment. When considering a pardon, a president examines extenuating circumstances to decide whether a punishment for a conviction under the law was unjust.

Here's what the Constitution (of which Paul supposedly is the champion) says about pardon power (Article Two, Section Two):

...he shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
That's IT. There is no legal characterization of what a pardon is or what it should be; outside of cases of impeachment, what the Prez sez goes -- a pardon is anything s/he wants it to be.

Once Bill Clinton decided that international fugitive Marc Rich had been crisscrossing the world without seeing his gorgeous wife Denise (who had conveeeeniently given a generous gift to the construction of the future Clinton Presidential Library), he pardoned him hours before George W. Bush was inaugurated.

Does it stink to high heaven? Yeah. Is there anything anybody can do about reversing it? See above.

One wonders if President Paul (gag) would appoint Federal and Supreme Court justices that also read stuff into the Constitution that isn't there.

Oh yeah, great principles.

Ron Paul’s $400 Million Earmarks
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,292334,00.html

He puts them in the bill, then votes against the bill knowing it will pass anyway, and then he can say it’s not his fault. He voted against it.

Hypocrite.

“Dr. Paul never utters the word “isolationist” except to explain why he is not one. He believes in the foreign policy of the founders: peace, commerce, and open friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.”

Sounds OK, except the entangling alliances we currently have are U.S. law, and our allies are depending on us to keep our word. What does Ron Paul believe is more important, upholding the law and US honor, or following George Washington’s farewell advice? Dr. Paul gives the impression that for him a speech our great founder gave in 1797 supercedes every other consideration.

Ron Paul should start his own party. The Isolationist Party, or the Kook Party, or the Surrender Party. Oops, that last one is already taken by the DemocRATs.

And somebody call this letter writer the waaaaambulance. Sounds like a terminal nutcase.

Off topic a bit;

Does anyone know the story behind Bob Novak’s ‘issues’ with Mona Charen? I’ve seen it mentioned in pass in recent weeks (in relation to Novak’s ‘Prince of Darkness’ bio) but never have learned whats at the heart of the matter.
