Wanted: Global Warming information for grade school

Posted on 11/19/2007 2:08:21 PM PST by Joe Republc

Hey folks,

My kids in grade school are getting hit with global warming, including viewing Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" movie.

Can anyone offer some very concise info from a source that won't get too-quickly-dismissed-out-of-hand? The teacher is convinced man-made global warming is a fact, backed by "scientific consensus".

Again, this is for grade school, so KISS please!

Thanks, -- Joe

Here is a good start:

It may require a little interpretation clarification by the teacher though.

Try this:

Global Warming: The Origin and Nature of the Alleged Scientific Consensus by Richard S. Lindzen

He is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Human-kind overall is a fallible bunch, and if it were possible for humans to mess up the environment to the point of it being impossible to continue to support life, none of us would be here now, because previous generations would have already screwed things up.

There is no such thing as “weather science or scientists”. Science, by definition, says that “if I do A, I will see B” and is totally predictable. But we all know that weather is unpredictable and is therefore an art, at best. If they cannot accurately predict with 100% certainty what the weather will be tomorrow how can they possibly predict the weather of the future?

Someone here has the NASA photos that show the ice formation at the south pole. The information from the British case about ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is also widely available.

However, the most useful part of this process may be the discussion you should be having with your child about the difference between facts and opinion. Defining ‘consensus’, ‘theory’, and ‘law’ (scientifically) may be helpful as well.

Wikipedia article on the last glacial maximum about 20,000 years ago. Global warming has been going on for the last 20,000 years, which explains why New Hampshire wasn't buried under a mile of ice back in 1776.

So the claim that human activity over the last fifty years is a major component of global warming leaves a little something to be desired, because the woolly mammoths weren't driving SUVs.

Check out this highlight sheet. Deals with all the latest science on warming and debunks the so-called ‘consensus.”

This is one stop shopping of almost every point alarmists make. Good luck.

"Wanted: Global Warming information for grade school"

I thought that's where most global warming information came from in the first place.

the concern is that we aren’t in an ice age so even if global warming is natural, it will still melt the ice caps and flood the coasts unless we do something about it

Thanks folks!

Also... any stories about other parents who’ve encountered this at their kids’ school would be appreciated!

Public school is where future scientific consensus is formed.

man-made global warming is a fact, backed by "scientific consensus".

Consensus is for political or historical science not natural science.

Sadly- I find that any thoughtful, logical discussion is not permitted, and any skepticism is ALWAYS dismissed out of hand.

It would be good if you could find something on Polar Bear population, showing that they are NOT going extinct and their numbers are on the rise.

There is absolutely nothing humans can do about it, any more than we can cap off a volcano to keep it from erupting.

The "20 foot sea level rise in 100 years" claim has been refuted by the IPCC itself:

The IPCC says sea-level increases up to 7 m (23 ft) above today’s levels have happened naturally in the past climate, and would only be likely to happen again after several millennia. In the next 100 years, according to calculations based on figures in the IPCC’s 2007 report, these two ice sheets between them will add a little over 6 cm (2.5 inches) to sea level, not 6 m (this figure of 6 cm is 15% of the IPCC’s total central estimate of a 43 cm or 1 ft 5 in sea-level rise over the next century). Gore has accordingly exaggerated the official sea-level estimate by approaching 10,000 per cent.

And so what if the sea level does creep up over the next 100, 200, or 300 years? People will just have to stop hitting up the US government for insurance for their beachfront property, that's all.
