[Cardinal] O'Malley draws line with Democrats
Boston Globe ^ | November 15, 2007 | Michael Paulson

Posted on 11/15/2007 4:41:56 PM PST by Quiet Man Jr.

BALTIMORE - Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley of Boston, saying the Democratic Party has been persistently hostile to opponents of abortion rights, asserted yesterday that the support of many Catholics for Democratic candidates "borders on scandal."

In his sharpest comments about the political landscape since he was installed as archbishop of Boston four years ago, O'Malley made clear that, despite his differences with the Republican Party over immigration policy, capital punishment, economic issues, and the war in Iraq, he views abortion as the most important moral issue facing policymakers.

"I think the Democratic Party, which has been in many parts of the country traditionally the party which Catholics have supported, has been extremely insensitive to the church's position, on the gospel of life in particular, and on other moral issues," O'Malley said.

Acknowledging that Catholic voters in Massachusetts generally support Democratic candidates who are in favor of abortion rights, O'Malley said, "I think that, at times, it borders on scandal as far as I'm concerned."

"However, when I challenge people about this, they say, 'Well, bishop, we're not supporting [abortion rights],' " he said. "I think there's a need for people to very actively dissociate themselves from those unacceptable positions, and I think if they did that, then the party would have to change."

The long-gone GOP stronghold in Massachusetts consisted of the old guard Yankees and the blue-bloods---Protestants---who despised Roman Catholics to their very core. It's no surprise that the Irish, the Italians, the French, and even the Germans found their way to the more populist Democratic party.

And old habits and prejudices die hard. That's why, despite the seizure of the Democratic party by the leftists in the 1960s, many Roman Catholics remain Democrats, at least in name. But I know many Democrats in the Commonwealth who are just as conservative as a southern Republican when it comes to social issues.

That’s the problem. No matter how many issues they agree with us on, they pull the D lever like Pavlov’s dogs!

It drives me batsh*t.

To most people around here, if you have an "R" after your name, you eat babies for breakfast, and kittens and puppies for dessert. It started with religious prejudice, and it's going to take several more generations to put it to rest.

Today’s yellow dog Democrats are not Southerners. BTW, when your aunt tries that answer out on St. Peter is a few years, I don’t think she will like the look on his face. ;-)

I've never known anyone who was all good or all bad. No reason to think O'Malley is an exception. Though one would think an anti-abortion stance in a Catholic bishop would be too basic to be praiseworthy. He's probably not a murderer or an arsonist either, but it wouldn't occur to me to think he should get a medal for it!

;-)

Not all women are whores/or golddiggers either. The universe is a bit larger than your parish. This is proved by the fact that not everyone you meet has had your experience.

I am Irish and I am Catholic. Twice Lapsed. I refuse to give money to the Church due to their political stances. I believe firmly in my faith, and raise my family that way.
I no longer attend Mass on a regular basis.
We are family, Country and God in this house.
All because we live in this socialist sewer.

C’mon now, Eagles2003. You’re making excuses in your own indiscernible code. Punishing God because some mortals may have disappointed you isn’t going to cut it on Judgment Day. Return to the sacraments and you will find indescribable happiness.

They have excommunicated themselves. We can still pray, however, for a conversion of their hearts............who knows? Could they start voting Republican? LOL!

I think that O’Malley is moving slowly and very cautiously. If you read the whole story, you will see how hard he was on these dimocrat politicians!

**He might want to check in with the socialist governor of MD, Martin O’Malley. **

No, the only one that Cardinal O’Malley needs to check in with is the Pope.

**I was a Catholic, gave up going to church for lent.**

Unless you did a whole bunch of paper work and hearings, you still are a Catholic.

Find a priest you can sit down with and talk to. Find out the answers to your questions. You may be surprised!

**Shrine of Czestahova **

I find this very difficult to believe. Jasna Gora is a wonderful site.

I saw many people entering on my pilgrimage there a year and a half ago.

I sense some kind of agenda somewhere. Were you having difficulties then? (You can answer in FReepmail if you wish.)

So you’re going to deny yourself the graces of the sacraments because of the politics of some clerics? That’s a “gutsy” move.

Cardinal O’Malley is a no-nonsense, true leader of the church. In nine short months he brought order back to our Palm Beach Diocese which had been rocked by not one, but two sex scandals involving sitting bishops in our diocese. He is a true priest and one who is a shining light of hope for the future of the church.

I am very pleased with the Cardinals comments but from what I heard on EWTN with Raymond Arroyo many of cardinals went wobbly when it came to the issue of abortion.

The comments and recommendations about Iraq were very specific, while the comments regarding voting put someone who is a perceived to be a racist in the same category as a politician that supports abortion.
