This is exactly what I find so distasteful, that some (many?) evangelicals support Huckabee over Thompson. Huckabee may very well be a decent Christian, but he’s definitely NOT conservative.

I argued here many times that most Christians oppose big government. I’m starting to believe I was mistaken, because some apparently prefer to use the power of the federal government to force their own agenda on America.

Fred Thompson believes in federalism. That means limited government and individual liberty, and those are key conservative concepts worth supporting.

What kind of country will we ultimately have if it comes down to which side can best use the power of the federal government to squash its opposition? That way leads to tyranny!

Huckabee is a quintessential whore and liar, hiding under the guise of Boy Scout conservatism.

That's it right there (and I'm speaking as a true-to-life Fundamentalist), there are a lot of Mike Huckabee-type Christians want the government to be their nanny and who want to ditch the Constitution that their ancestors crafted by the guidance and wisdom of God. American Christians will rue the day they put their trust in a Constitutional amendment as the way to fix any and every thing they don't like in this country, mark my words.

I don’t think the Huck supporters really believe he’s a liberal. He says he’s for the FAIR tax and ending the IRS.

Fred on the other hand doesn’t tell you exactly what tax reform plan he is for.

Here’s another comparison. go to both websites to see what Huck and Fred say about the 2nd amendment.
Fred says:

I strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. Gun control is touted as a major crime-control measure. But some of the places with the strictest gun-control laws also have high violent-crime rates. Disarming law-abiding citizens does not prevent crime. The answer to violent crime is smart, effective, and aggressive law enforcement. The real effect of these gun-control measures is to place onerous restrictions on law-abiding citizens who use firearms for such legal activities as self-defense, sport-shooting, hunting, and collecting. I am committed to:

* Strictly enforcing existing laws and severely punishing violent criminals.
* Protecting the rights individual Americans enjoy under the Second Amendment.

ok very good. here’s Huck:

No candidate has a stronger, more consistent record on Second Amendment rights than I do. Our Founding Fathers, having endured the tyranny of the British Empire, wanted to guarantee our God-given liberties. They devised our three branches of government and our system of checks and balances. But they were still concerned that the system could fail, and that we might someday face a new tyranny from our own government. They wanted us to be able to defend ourselves, and that’s why they gave us the Second Amendment.

Now do you see why perhaps Fred needs to do more to compete against huck?

***I find it distasteful as well. Except, of course, that I think they should be supporting the acknowledged evangelical conservative in the race, Hunter. Thompson is probably not a christian, and certainly has let it be known to Dobson that he “won’t dance to his tune”. I’m a Dobson fan, and I hope that Dobson endorses Hunter.

What kind of country will we ultimately have if it comes down to which side can best use the power of the federal government to squash its opposition?
***I agree completely. Less government is the answer regardless of who is in charge, democrap or republican.

Its sad that so many evangelicals support Huckabee because it is bad strategy since the fiscal conservatives won’t support him. However, I totally understand why they don’t like Thompson. Thompson basically took it forgranted that he had our support and then continually went out of his way to lose our support. First, he said that he didn’t go to much much or want to talk about his faith, then he said that he didn’t support the marriage amendment, then instead of trying to patch thing up with Dobson he said that he didn’t care to talk to him and didn’t march to anyone’s drum, then he refused to take a position on the Terri Schievo case, then he stated that he would not support the Human Life Amendment or legislation under the 14th Amendment to ban abortion, and finally he stated that he thought the Schievo case should have been left to the state courts (which killed her by depriving her of water) and said that he was upset that some people (us social conservatives) had “made a political football” out of the case. So, at the end of the day is it any surprise we don’t like Fred. He could hardly have done a better job of offending and alianating us if that was his goal.
