Huckabee slides into second in Iowa
KCRG TV News, Iowa ^ | 11/8/2007

In what has become one of the least predictable presidential races in recent history, Mike Huckabee, the far-right conservative Baptist pastor who likes to make jokes and play his guitar, has moved into second place in polls in Iowa.

Sixty-five days remain before Iowa's caucuses, and until now Huckabee was a far cry from the lead, which has been solidly held by Mitt Romney.

He doesn't have Rudy Giuliani's celebrity status or John McCain's gravitas -- or anywhere near the warchest of Mitt Romney -- but Huckabee has quietly established himself as a godsend to the religious right, principally due to his skepticism of evolution, vehement opposition of gay rights, and aggressive stance on Iraq.

Huckabee knows that Christian conservatives have heretofore lacked the perfect fit in a candidate, and has set about quietly becoming their top choice.

Despite his conservatism, he's also a fan of the liberal arts and education spending. He recently told Northern Iowa University students that there was too much of a focus in academia on math and science. "Math and science without music and art, is like trying to fly an airplane with a wing on the left, but without one on the right," he said.

As far as all fifty states go, Huckabee was polling Wednesday in third place behind Giuliani and Fred Thompson and ahead of Romney and McCain.

However, despite recent gains Huckabee is still short on capital. As of last month, he has only raised $2.3 million. This is in comparison to Romney's impressive $62 million.

You would agree that Huckabee is certainly more pro-life and pro-family than Fred. And Huckabee didn’t help draft the campaign finance reform laws like Fred did. Granted Huckabee has been weak on abortion in the past - but is that worse than Fred’s past enthusiastic support for McCain Feingold?

“Mike Huckabee, the far-right conservative Baptist pastor”

I stopped reading right there? Far right? My ass. Other than abortion, his positions aren’t right wing at all. Yet another dumbass “journalist” at work.

Huckabee would not raise his hand if he would have vetoed the Schip bill. And as for his Fair Tax ideas, has his past work in Arkansas possibly proved that was an election year proposal to defect past issues? Maybe so.

The man is probably the weakest in the field on foreign policy. He makes Hillary look like Patton there.

Not a chance for Huckabee in the real world.
A win in Iowa, or a second place finish, will put his record firmly in the spotlight. Once that happens it will make it impossible for him to do well in SC and Florida and many other places. He's too liberal. Way too liberal. He's an evangelical leftist. Post-Iowa, conservatives everywhere will see that.

From the many posts I have seen concerning huckabee, he shouldn’t be classified as far right. also, as many note additionally, the media keeps telling us who is ‘the candidate’.

don’t tell us who is the one, tell us about each of them. or shut up, oops i mean be quiet

I for one would take Huckabee over Giuliani, Romney, Thompson or McCain any day. Would you agree that Huckabee is much better than them?

Read a few of the articles I've compiled on the Huckster found in my profile page and then get back to me on that thought. I've known Huck longer than the vast majority of FReepers and have suffered under his governorship of our state. What he says and what he does in office, doesn't sync. Don't buy a book by its cover. Read its content to decide.

He is in favor of the federal marriage amendment...

Article Excerpt: "Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, meanwhile, recently told the Monitor that he opposes same-sex marriage and that his evangelical faith informs his views. Huckabee, a Republican, added that is open to the idea of states passing civil union laws...."

I agree with you that Duncan Hunter is much better. I was just comparing Huckabee to the big four.

It’s all moot, Huckabee won’t go anywhere, even if he does wins or places strong in IA. Conservatives all know that the media is pushing for him. 10% in the polls, my ass. He has less than $1 million campaign cash on hand.

What kind of bizarre news reporting is this? An entire article about a poll and no numbers?

Why such a strong reaction to Huckabee.

Because he's a big-time nanny-stater and control freak. When I want limited government, that means from the social conservative end of it too. Stop trying to regulate my health habits. This is why the GOP is in a tailspend, people like Huckabee are ignoring a huge voting bloc who just want to be left alone & will pander to a shrinking GOP base.
