ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Faced with increasing violence and unrest, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency Saturday, government sources told CNN.
President Pervez Musharraf has faced a flurry of criticism from opponents in Pakistan.
Musharraf issued an order proclaiming the emergency and suspending the nation's constitution, according to a statement read on state television, and declaring martial law.
Musharraf is scheduled to address the nation at 1800 GMT (2 p.m. ET) Saturday.
The Supreme Court declared the state of emergency illegal, claiming Musharraf had no power to suspend the constitution, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry told CNN.

There may be lessons to learn after all is said and done.....like, Rule number one for a mountain boy, don’t come down off the mountain.
this is my suspicion -
No,. 1 = we now have crack troops just across that region in Afghanistan - the 173rd Airborne Task Force - in the Kunar Region, which OBL considers home and has been seen scooting down the mountainsides to spend the winter in the Korengal Valley -
NO. 1: Heretofore, Musharif's operations have been bomb/cease fire/retreat (due to restrictions?) and let the scum regroup and recoup, getting expedientially stronger...
No 3: India issues a "regrets" and the U.S. is "disappointed" and then both go on to hoping for future free election in Jan.
Those are hardly condemnations. Methinks we may be standing ready on the border of Afghanistan with highly trained boots on the ground and plenty of air cover...and India the same on her borders - now we're about to tighten the noose?
No. 4: Winter is coming on hard in the mountains of the Hindu Kush - the Taliban and al Q go to ground for the winter - and winter is near impossible for successful campaigns there -
NOW is the time to
Were you a general? in a past life? ;0)
She just did -on a CNN interview- she is one outspoken and gutsy lady..
Good point and an important one to remember.
The Western press will first and always remind us of Moosh's "dictatorial rule which began with a military coup against the elected government", and then replay as much Taliban, aQ, and Islamist ranting as they can get their hands on.
They will never bring up the ugly fact that Nawar Sharif - whom Moosh overthrew - is an Islamist controlled by ISI/Hamid Gul (another Islamist and former head of ISI), and that his brother-in-law is/was the biggest heroin dealer in Pakistan (are you beginning to see the pattern?)
Best to keep an eye on the blogs and consider the NYT/Globe/WashPost to be ISI/Islamist counterintelligence.
Here is an interview that hutto did with Al Jazeera(Frost)yesterday.

The political portion is mostly toward the end around 10 minutes into it. It starts out with the attempt on her life when she returned to Pak. All of it is interesting.
Runs about 14 mins.
More on Friday’s mystery strike:
Witnesses say missile hits madrassa founded by Osama’s friend
ISLAMABAD/MIRAN SHAH: A missile attack launched by a US drone aircraft on Friday killed at least ten people and wounded several more near a madrasa run by pro-Al Qaeda Mujahideen in Pakistan’s Waziristan region, witnesses said.
Residents said drones flew over the village of Danday Darpakhel before two missiles hit, one of which destroyed a house formerly owned by Mullah Dadullah, the late Taliban military commander killed in Afghanistan in May 2007.
Local sources said at least 10 militants were killed and a dozen others wounded in Friday’s blast. Two foreigners — usually associated with Al-Qaeda in the tribal regions — were among the dead, they said, quoting injured rebels.
Thanks
Sorry, but this has to be a false article. Where the hell are all of the civilian deaths that are always attributed to out actions? s/
What’s your point? One of these subs posted off shore of the US with 16 nukes would put us in extreme danger.
What makes you so sure???
Sure of what?
That there is a zero possibility of loose nukes.
What difference would that make to anybody?
