I urge everyone to write Motorcyclist Magazine and let them know how you feel. Below is the letter that I wrote to the magazinie.
Just picked up the Nov 07 issue (of Motorcyclist) from the (Post Exchange) PX. I needed something to read while waiting in the barber shop for my high-and-tight. I flip open the magazine and go straight to the Buell article by Aaron Frank.
I get half way through the the first paragraph when I came across the phrase "ambiguous Iraq War". This is a slap in the face to anyone who has worn a uniform.
First, as a Sr NCO with 20 plus years, there is nothing ambiguous about the war in Iraq. It is so very clearly a part of the larger war against Islamic Terrorism. Haven't you seen the videos of hooded men shouting Allah Akbar Every time they chop off a head or bomb innocents and Soldiers alike. Doesn't Frank remember 911?
There is nothing ambiguous about watching an Soldier present a triangular shaped folded flag to a woman or child seated beneath a canopy and reverently recite a solemn speech that begins,"On behalf of a grateful nation."
I spend everyday thinking about the war and how best to train new Soldiers so that they can carry on and win this "ambiguous war".
So when I pick up a motorcycle magazine the last thing I want is politics from a publication that should stick to what it knows, motorcycles, and let the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines handle the war.
Phasta.
I want the Barris Batcycle, you putz.
I think you’re getting a little too worked up over 3 words written by some boob in a bike mag. And, IIRC, I use the word “boob” advisedly where Aaron Frank is concerned. Just let it go...
“Ambiguous” to the writer maybe; as I’d guess perhaps the term “manhood” is to him as well.
I got po’d at a guy in a Japanese motorcycle club for sending out BS about the war....Liberals feel they need to always have their mouths open
But not, unfortunately, as impressively as everything else on the market at the time, and certainly not impressively enough for H-D to actually manage to sell any of them.
With the median age of H-D riders approaching 60, "handling" is no more to be expected from a Harley than from a Cadillac Coupe de Whatever.
I think one of the most popular Harley accessories these days is a chrome-plated holder for your cane.
*******
I resemble that remark...
And I would be happy to ride my verrrrrry conservative sport tourer next to any one else's Hardly any day...
Of course that is qualified by the several assumptions....
That Hog riders can keep up on the interstate...
Hang in there on the twisties....
Can make over 250 miles per tank...
...And still have most of their dental fillings after any good day's IBA SS1000 ride!
Can we spell sm-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-th acceleration and cruise?!?
Otherwise , we won't get into a discussion on mileage... maintainability, maneuverability... or money on the front end.
Anyone have the email for this Moto-Mag publisher person??
Thankyewwwww.....
There’s nothing ambiguous about killing al Qaeda islamofascists!
ouch....prbably rides a Vespa
and he’s no Jean Paul Belmondo
OK I know my statement was a little harsh and I deserve some abuse.
When I go to the Chrome Horse in CR, a Harley bar, I feel at home because I'm 45 and most Harley riders are old like me.
And as part of that victory, we need to establish a permanent base in Iraq from which all other skirmishes agains terrorists and terrorism in the Middle East can be planned, manned, and executed. They owe us the space. We've invested the blood of our warriors on that soil to free them from the clutches of tyranny and terror. Let's not let those sacrifices be in vain.
We're going to difficult enough to handle right here in the U.S. if we continue to be targeted. Pre-emption and aggressive and instant retaliaiton should be the order of the day.
The world will be on fire if America does not take the lead and rid civilization of this menace. We are the only ones capable. That's about as un-ambiguous as I can get.
Its interesting that the editorial staff of that magazine appears brain dead to that fact.
They ain't got no historical perspective. That's been the case at least since 16 October, 1965.
Correction”:
That should be, “It’s going to be difficult enough to handle terrorism right here in the U.S. . . . . . . “
I saw the same article. I won’t be buying that rag anymore.
Back in the late 80's Harley came out with the XR-1000, and it failed for similar reasons. People wanted an XR, not an XL that had an XR-style motor in it, which is what H-D built.
Now H-D is considering another XR model that looks like an XR, and will probably do much better. Check it out.
I figured that when I neared 60 years of age I'd get to be one of the crabby old fart *elder statesmen* scooter tramps like the ones who've guided me along the way since I was 16.
But the last serious run I was on included a guy who was 85, who was running a '55 FLH Harley like he'd just bought it yesterday, though both it and him showed the effects of more than a few miles since then.
But so is mine (ST1300)!
VVrrrooom!!
Ride safe...
