Mitt Romney is a Mormon and I am a Baptist: Get Over It!
North Star Writers Group ^ | October 29, 2007 | Herman Cain

Posted on 10/29/2007 8:28:33 AM PDT by Invisigoth

The Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Mormons and a few other faiths have three things in common – they believe in Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God and that He died and was resurrected for our sins.

So what’s the problem?

The political pundits continue to try and make Mitt Romney’s religious beliefs a big issue as he runs for the Republican presidential nomination. Different denominations of Christianity are just that – different denominations – which means different worship practices of the same fundamental Christian beliefs.

Some people have commented that they cannot support Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon. When they are pressed to explain why that is objectionable, they stutter. Still others are skeptical of Mitt Romney based solely on hearsay or lack of knowledge about Mormons.

In a modified version of the famous line by Deep Throat in All The Presdident’s Men: “Follow the posting history.”

The removed posts at #453 and #454 involved Colorcountry and Hi Heels. I’m sorry to disappoint you that I was not involved in those “ranting and attacking” posts. But no surprise that is was a fellow member of your “flying inman” posse involved in what you describe as the “ranting and attacking.”

Thank you anyway for thinking that it was me involved in the posts. It shows you really care.

You are correct in my haste I added the tenets of some Protestant sects. There was no Bible at that time and the Trinity would not be revealed in full until Pentecost.

Item #1 is the only criteria to being a Christian.

I said: The rest is so distorted as to be unrecognizable to a Mormon in good standing.

You Said: Why the qualifier??

Because some of the anti's here still have membership in the church, though they haven't been active, or believed it in years, they would shortly come out of the woodwork and Say, "Technically I'm a Mormon, and I think (insert something ridiculous here)" so I just exclude them to stop the whole thing.

Like them FUNDAMENTALISTS in ColoCity!

I pointed out that I have some FLDS friends, and actually, they live in Colorado City (or nearby) and THEY don't like to be called Mormons, or Polygamists. They prefer Fundamentalists,s, or FLDS, and the term plural marriage.

I had an interesting discussion one day where I explained the Polygamy is more than one wife and Polyandry is more than one husband (they had thought polygamy meant both) and that it was a technical term, they were less offended by it when I explained that.

Anyway, the point is THEY don't want to be called LDS or Mormon so to call them that is to do so without support.

“You admit that NO data would convince you otherwise?”

I’m saying that correlation is not evidence of a cause/effect relationship. That is a fact of statistics. What happens over and over again are (false) claims of a correlation then an invalid leap to cause/effect relationship not justified by the evidence. Invalid and unjustified conclusion only convince me that the people advancing them are either ignorant or dishonest.

I don’t know Mark Willes from a hole in the wall, and frankly who is in his family tree has nothing to do with what kind of person he is.

What I do know is that more often than not when I see a hit piece of yellow journalism against the church, it originated with the LA Times. BTW, the liberals accuse the MSM of being biased against them by looking at the CEO’s and owners rather than the product as well.

I noticed that you didn’t try to substantiate your suicide accusation in your reply.

Are any of these statements wrong? If so, educate me. Not one is an othodox Christian view.

The Mormon-Evangelical Divide
Beliefs that set Mormons apart, and evangelicals’ response.
By James A. Beverley | posted 2/01/2000 12:00AM

Distinctive LDS Beliefs

1. God the Father and Jesus appeared to Joseph Smith in 1820, calling him to restore the Church of Christ.

2. The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price constitute sacred scripture, along with the Bible.

3. The Father (Elohim) is a distinct God from Jesus (the Jehovah of the Old Testament) and the Holy Ghost.

4. God the Father has a body and has a wife (the Heavenly Mother).

5. Jesus is the literal son of the Father (Elohim) and Mary. Some Mormon leaders contend that there was a sexual union between God and Mary.

6. All humans pre-existed as spirits in heaven. Mormon prophets have taught that those who were unfaithful in the spirit world were cursed to be born on earth with black skin.

7. Sacred temple ceremonies were revealed to Joseph Smith, including baptism for the dead and eternal marriage. Mormons can progress to godhood in the next world through following temple endowment rituals.

Evangelical Christian Response

1. Smith’s false prophecies, occult involvement, anti-biblical theology, and polygamy ruin his credibility as apostle-prophet.

2. The Bible alone is the written Word of God. Mormon scriptures contradict clear biblical teaching and cannot be new revelation from God.

3. The triune affirmation of the unity of God in three persons remains Christian orthodoxy.

4. Jesus said in John 4 that the Father is a Spirit. The Mormon notion that God has one or more wives is absolute speculation and reflects an anthropomorphic understanding of God.

5. Matthew and Luke teach that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit, and Christian tradition has never interpreted this as a sexual act.

6. The Bible nowhere implies that humans pre-exist. Mormon speculations about the curse on black people are rooted in nineteenth-century racist theories believed by early Mormon leaders.

7. Mormon temple ceremonies are not biblical in nature and easily lead to works righteousness.

James A. Beverley, professor of theology and ethics at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto.
