If I recall correctly, that was the central theme of the Dole campaign back in 96.

If I recall correctly, the Dole campaign didn't have a theme. One of the reasons he got pasted, he gave nobody any reason to vote for him. He didn't attack Clinton head on, he didn't offer much of any kind of program, and he was not a conservative to begin with.

Not intentionally. But thats what it amounted to.

One of the reasons he got pasted, he gave nobody any reason to vote for him. He didn't attack Clinton head on, he didn't offer much of any kind of program, and he was not a conservative to begin with.

All throughout his campaign were mostly tv commercials that attacked Clinton, and didnt spell out what Dole stood for, what he would do once in office. One time, during the campaign, the news made a big deal in their upcoming broadcasts about a new tv commercial the Dole team were coming out with. Saying that the commercial would be something explosive. Something BIG that would destroy the Clinton campagn once and for all and help Dole to win. Then the news broadcast came on and showed the commercial, which turned out to be nothing more than just another "bash Clinton" commercial. If I had any doubts about Dole losing the election (and I pretty much knew that he would lose the election long before he was the nominee), they were wiped out by that commercial.
