Feds strike ID deal over NY licenses

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

The Bush administration and New York agreed Saturday on a compromise creating a more secure driver's license for U.S. citizens and allowing illegal immigrants to get a version.

New York is the fourth state to reach such an agreement, after Arizona, Vermont and Washington. The issue is pressing for border states, where new and tighter rules are soon to go into effect for crossings.

The deal comes about one month after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced a plan whereby illegal immigrants with a valid foreign passport could obtain a license.

The agreement with the Homeland Security Department will create a three-tier license system in New York, the largest state to sign on so far to the government's post-Sept. 11 effort to make identification cards more secure.

Spitzer, who has faced much criticism on the issue, said the deal means New York "will usher in the most secure licensing system in the nation."

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he was not happy that New York intended to issue IDs to illegal immigrants. But he said there was nothing he could do to stop it.

"I don't endorse giving licenses to people who are not here legally, but federal law does allow states to make that choice," Chertoff said.

New York will produce one ID that will be as secure as a passport and is intended for people who soon will need to meet such requirements, even for a short drive to Canada.

A second version of the license will meet new federal standards of the Real ID Act, a law designed to make it much harder for illegal immigrants or would-be terrorists to obtain licenses.

Thankfully I left NY while the getting was good.

It will follow you where ever you go. It's just a matter of time. I still live in N.Y. and I'm against this license law change too, but even if it didn't go through illegals still drive, licensed or not. Driving without a valid licenses is only a violation of the vehicle and traffic law in N.Y. Illegals simply drive junk cars so if impounded it's not much of a loss. Illegals carry no identification on them when they drive and use three or four names for example Jose, Manuel, Escalades, Aguilar. The same with dates of birth. Illegals are usually released on $50.00 bail for a court appearance that they never keep. They cannot be photographed or printed for the traffic violation. The next time the illegal is apprehended for a similar violation he uses the name of Manuel, Jose, Aguilar, Escalades. This game goes on and on. Judges will not remand illegals who commit these violations to jail. Names are added and dropped. a total break down of law and order.

A third type of license will be available to undocumented immigrants. Spitzer has said this ID will make the state more secure by bringing those people "out of the shadows" and into American society, and by lowering auto insurance rates.

This is only possible in a sanctuary state.

Every legal resident of New York should show up with no I.D. and an alias to receive the ‘new’ NY license. Holler discrimination if they won’t let them have one.
Gotta play the same games the politicians and illegal sympathists play.

What a weasel...

No. Not really.

Not that I would defend Chertoff, but the federal government has no power to sign off or approve any state driver license.

Federalism is at issue here

The state and the federal government can agree on what information is required to use them for identification purposes.

So now, hundreds of thousands of airline workers, security workers, voting place workers, Dept of Motor Vehicle workers, police, etc, from every state in the union, must be able to tell the difference from a “real” NY drivers license from the “illegal” license, -

even though the illegal license will look the same as the “legal” ID.

How stupid does the government think our citizens are??

I'm confused...can't the State Senate vote this down? Why is there no mention in any article about voting rights?

“Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he was not happy that New York intended to issue IDs to illegal immigrants.”

This from the man who tried to portray us as racists and bigots.

“Every legal resident of New York should show up with no I.D.” LOL

Would be great, but the fellas in power know that we legal law abiding citizens are easier to control. Lining up now to be the first on my block with that wonderful “REAL ID” card.

POLS FEAR VOTING FRAUD IN SPITZER’S LICENSE PLAN

By KENNETH LOVETT, Post Correspondent

October 22, 2007 — ALBANY - State election officials are worried that Gov. Spitzer’s plan to allow illegal aliens to obtain driver’s licenses will make it difficult for them to catch people voting illegally.

“There has been concern,” state Board of Elections spokesman Lee Daghlian told The Post.

While it is up to the local boards of election to determine who is eligible to vote, it is rare that election officials check into a person’s legal status, particularly if they have identifying information on their voter-registration form like a driver’s license or the last four digits of a Social Security number, Daghlian said.

In order to register, a person must sign an affidavit stating that they are an American citizen.

“You assume that people don’t lie, and that’s what the form says,” Daghlian said. “It’s an affidavit you sign under penalty of perjury.”

But Daghlian concedes, “Nobody checks it” to determine its validity.

At the polls, voters are asked to show some form of photo ID, like a driver’s license, to prove their identity, Daghlian said.

“I suppose it would be [tough to catch] if someone wanted to take advantage of the system and try to get a number of people registered who aren’t citizens and went ahead and got them driver’s licenses,” he said.

Spitzer last month announced that beginning in December, the state will allow illegal aliens to obtain driver’s licenses by no longer requiring that applicants provide Social Security numbers or letters that a person is not eligible for such a number.

It will be a powerful issue to raise in ‘08 because so many people oppose it. But when the Democrats can add millions of illegal voters, it may be a wash.

“Why pretend any longer that all of this crap is going to be resolved peacefully?”

I’m afraid you are right. Damn these f***ing politicians for selling out my country! The sh!t is going to hit the fan soon, and illegals and their enablers will be on one side and true American patriots will be on the other. I do not consider an American citizen who sells out American sovereignty for political purposes, nor those who agree with them, to be true American patriots. Rather, they are the enemy.

Get ready, folks, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

I'm confused...can't the State Senate vote this down?

The State Senate alone isn't enough. A bill also has to pass the State Assembly, which is controlled by a huge Democrat majority. So far, the Assembly has supported Spitzer. Also, Spitzer has to sign the bill, unless both Houses of the Legislature can summon up enough votes to override his veto.

Thanks, Buster. Won’t Spitzer’s plan have to pass in both houses? That’s why I thought the Senate could vote it down.

Won’t Spitzer’s plan have to pass in both houses?

Spitzer issued an executive order. There was no consultation with the legislature, no hearings, nada. According to the Democrat State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, Spitzer was within his legal rights to do this. There are some legal suits in progress.

"I don't endorse giving licenses to people who are not here legally,
but federal law does allow states to make that choice," Chertoff said.

"You say illegal aliens are attempting to murder ICE agents, are setting fire to
forests and fields along the border to distract US Border Patrol Agents to make
their crossing easier, and throwing Molotov cocktails at US agents’ vehicles, and
setting fire to their observation posts? "

"I'm the Homeland Security Chief. What do you want me to do about it? "
