My cousin was a history major. He makes a pretty good living as a computer programmer now. Get a life kid.

Shut up crybaby! This is what happens to white males. Blatant job discrimination. Non-white-males get their college tuition at reduced rate and don’t have to pay back as much as white males. Get used to it!

Apparently this sniveling little brat is still a boy. How embarrassing to write an article like this.

Dear Ken,

When you finally find this thread you will discover a wealth of good, solid advice amongst all the well deserved abuse. You can turn away from it and feel even more sorry for yourself or you can embrace it and get on with the rest of your life.

My recommendation is to move out of your parents house immediately (within a few days of reading this)and don’t ever move back. Don’t accept invitations for dinner more than once a month. Moving out is actually the hardest part of the bromide.

Put one foot in front of the other, get a job, any job, find a good woman, make babies and over time all your current angst will seem like nothing more than a distant dream.

Good luck,

Good grief. Thirty years ago I faced similar situation, except I was 28, married and had a baby on the way. Wife and I had accumulated college bills. Undergrad degree in physics wasn't very useful in the job market at that time. But it never occurred to me that other fellow citizens should assume the burden of my choices. Financially, things worked out fine. Had to live in low rent digs, and work lots of overtime for a while, but not so hard.

Society now is breeding a generation of helpless wimps.

Hey, I have a friend with a “pottery” degree. We both have the same job, and she feels that she should make more than me just because she has that degree.

The parents and councilors that fail to inform our youth of the importance of obtaining MARKETABLE SKILLs, ought to pay some penalty.

Especially if staying in upstate New York is in the picture!

Perhaps he should join the Military?
In 4 or 5 years he will have a marketable skill and a new ceiling fan!

Upon graduating, I was helplessly launched headfirst into the “real world,” equipped with a degree in history and $32,000 in student loans

I started college majoring in Oceanography. During school I asked about my employment potential in the future as well as earning. I was told that there were no jobs for us and most end up in other fields. I took that advice and launched another career. To bad this little whiny turd didn't look ahead.

The real world is really tough.

Could I sacrifice my ideals by falling into line?

You can give it a shot.

This kid probably wants to get paid to write papers criticizing America just like he did in college. That’s his dream job.

>>As a liberal arts major, I dreamed of making a profound difference in people’s lives. Instead, for a year, I lived in Coldfoot, a town north of the Arctic Circle that resembles a Soviet Gulag camp.<<

I try to be a nice guy. I really do try to see things from other people’s perspectives. And we talk about a lot bad people on Freep but on some level this guy pisses me off more than even they do. Maybe its because I think his attitude actually hurts the country more than a terrorist’s.

Just thought I'd give you all a heads-up, but I came to this posting at Free Republic after doing a Google search on the author. An article of his was just posted at Salon.com about how he's avoiding debt while pursuing his graduate degree. For starters, the man has gone to great lengths to escape his debt, and then to not create any further debt while he educates himself further.

He makes some really intelligent points throughout the article about how post-secondary students are borrowing against their future selves, and I'd be surprised if anyone would argue the crippling debt many American students graduate with is a good thing. Here's the story: I live in a van down by Duke University.

......a degree in history....

One of my favorite authors is Will Durant who wrote a thin but fantastic book on the lessons of history.

One of the lessons of modern history is “don’t get a degree in history and hope to make a living.”
