UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

And 67 is at a standstill.

My family on 67 (that were the ones told their home was gone during the Cedar fire) just called. They were told to be ready to go within the next hour. And this area was essentially gone during the Cedar fires. They were told to plan to not be at home through the night.

AccuWeather.com Weather News Headlines
Extreme Santa Ana Winds
Updated: Sunday, October 21, 2007 3:36 PM

The term being used to describe the weather across Southern California goes beyond "windy" as extreme Santa Ana winds are pounding the region. With a strong area of high pressure moving into the Rockies, the resultant offshore flow will cause winds to howl from the northeast. The strongest winds will blast the mountains and places through and below passes and canyons into Tuesday morning. In these locations, winds will peak past 80 mph at times with winds topping 100 mph not out of the question tonight and Monday morning. Sunday morning, winds gusted to 112 mph at Laguna Peak.
The intense wind gusts have already been responsible for downing trees and power lines and rapidly spreading fires. As the next headline details, these threats will continue into early Tuesday. The winds will also impact motorists by whipping sand and dust around, which will dangerously lower visibility. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use extreme caution. Early Sunday morning, the winds overturned a semi-truck on a freeway in Rancho Cucamonga.

The gradient difference between the high & low must be pretty extreme this time. That’s all that makes the winds blow.

Early Sunday morning, the winds overturned a semi-truck on a freeway in Rancho Cucamonga.

Just got a report from someone who spotted 8 overturned big rigs driving from Los Angeles to Fontana.

The dispatch operator I'm listening to is in WAAAAAY over his head. In his defense, this is a scary-high amount of information to process. But still.

That will give you a feel for how much force comes with the cold air spilling down the Cajon Pass from the High Desert.....

It wasn’t as hot here as down there, I don’t think. We got up to 67F today. It’s 52 now, and the wind has pretty much died.
