LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

And I hope you know that my directive was with complete affection. Don’t make me come out there..... ;)

Don’t have to be a professional to say that. It’s definitely happening — in all these fires. How are the winds there by you? Still gusting big?

“I told my brother the new Residence Inn in Burbank (1st and Verdugo)....its brand new and the parking lot looked empty”

Pretty good chain......good place to hide out for a couple days.

Oh I was wondering what you were talking about earlier. :) She can get mad if she wants, but she ought to be packing the car.

BE SUPER SAFE, GRAMMA.

Does wetting down the area around help at all? And the roof?

There’s a man on KNX saying the same thing, too. “This is the first time in x number of years that I’m thinking of evacuating...” Well hell’s bells, man, what are you waiting for? Put your grandma’s linens and baby pictures in your car!

Gridlock on a ‘safe’ street is better than being too near the flames.

I lost my live feed! Any suggestions?

I would not stick around if there was smoke. People are so reluctant to leave, but I would think they’d rather leave now before they have to scramble in a panic.

It’s right in the middle of the two prior fires. North of Cedar, south of Paradise. It appears to be splitting around Ramona, with a south flank that’s up against the old Cedar burn area, and a north flank that’s going through Black Canyon, Pamo, and the Mesa Grande reservation area.

This is very similar to the Cedar fire in that the full extent of the bad news won’t be evident until daylight. They’re just getting it a piece at a time now. The thing that’s really irritating is that the very limited resources are being fragmented trying to handle panic calls from trapped civilians who were told to leave six hours ago.

I’m in Escondido, and we’re keeping a wary eye on this thing. The glow’s visible on the horizon, and if that northern leg keeps going, the San Diego Wild Animal Park may be at risk. It’s going to be a sleepless night.

The winds are still crazy and the sky just to the west of us was filled with an orange smoke cloud before night fell.

the dirty little secret of all this is that a lot of the plants in the Paseos that line all these houses...the bikepaths, footpaths, died during the big freeze...and were not replaced. Some came back to like, but a lot of the green spaces were dead brush

= = =

Ouch. That’s gotta be a huge problem.

Prayers for all concerned and especially the fire fighters.

Wow. Are the winds bad there, too?

You can head south if you have to, right?
