UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in an Orange County news conference, acknowledged Saturday that improvements could be made to the state's deployment of firefighting aircraft, softening his previous stance that criticism about the state's response was “nonsense.”"As sad as it is, it takes a disaster to wake everyone," Schwarzenegger said at the command post for the Santiago Fire this afternoon. "With any kind of disaster there are things we can do better next time and we will."

The governor also warned those responsible for setting the Santiago and other fires: "If I were one of those people who started the fire, I would not sleep soundly right now, because we are right behind you. As a matter of fact, if I would be you, I would turn myself in."

The tension over the last week between some Orange County representatives and the state about the lack of deployed resources, seemed to melt a little Saturday, with Schwarzenegger joking amid the morning drizzle, that he wanted to make sure "that Los Angeles doesn't get all the rain and no rain is allocated to Orange County."

Santiago, Slide fires still worrisome
Los Angeles Times, 2:59PM

Wildfires were a growing threat in Orange and San Bernardino counties today, even as there were hopeful signs of a return to normal life in hard-hit San Diego, with Qualcomm Stadium no longer housing fire evacuees.

The Santiago fire in Orange County burned fiercely in the Santa Ana Mountains, threatening 750 homes in Silverado Canyon and moving quickly toward Riverside County. Firefighters coated homes with protective gel and ordered dozens of residents to evacuate as thick plumes of smoke heralded the spread of the main blaze.

Dick Birger, a spokesman with the Southwest Incident Management team, said at 1 p.m. that the fire was expected to move into the Silverado Canyon area of Orange County. Riverside County officials said the Coldwater-Wild Rose and Mayhew-Sycamore Creek areas were at greatest risk if the fire crossed into their county.

In Green Valley Lake near Running Springs in the San Bernardino Mountains, firefighters worked to contain the Slide fire, which threatened 10,000 structures. Mandatory evacuations remained in effect for communities west of Big Bear Lake to Crestline.

Our national forests are growing older and thicker, some reaching astronomical densities of 2,000 trees per acre where 40-50 trees per acre would be natural.
