UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

And then hung
My cousin lives in Lake Forest. I hope he and the cat are all right.
Yeah, I’m Calling Mom IL right now in Lake Forest
Where do you live.
First come the autumn fires, then come the winter rains, and then comes the spring mudslides and floods.
I’ve been away from any reporting all day. Am now watching major news channels, and am in shock at the devastation. Duncan Hunter was on CNN and has arranged for the National Guard to come in (at noon tomorrow). Gov. Schwarzenegger’s request hasn’t reached the WH yet. None of this makes any sense. What will happen between now and noon tomorrow? And why hasn’t the Governor’s plea been received in Washington?
From the maps, it looks like a lot of people only have one way out of the mountains.
Then, the horses - running (with flames surrounding them) - not knowing where to go.
OMG, this is so horrible! PLEASE get out of there, anybody trying to stay and save their home! Prayers have continued all day. (I know they are being heard, but not sure about the answers!)
It does appear that mother nature is going to make that a flat place someday.
Is CNN reporting that Arnold hasn’t heard from the White House? That’s not right- I read-or- heard 2-3 times today that The White House has been in touch with California though I don’t remember if it was Arnold directly.
LOL, al baby. You’re the best.
Thats BS, Bush has been on the phone all day with Arnold
Well, the San Gabriel Mountains, just north of Los Angeles, are some of the steepest mountains in any urban area. Don't think flat is in the cards.
It was reported that the Gov. had made an urgent request (dang - wish I wrote the words down) to the WH, and it had not been recieved yet. (Perhaps that means it hasn’t been responded to, at this time.) I thought when I heard it - GEEZE! What is the hold-up? I write an email to my friend in NY, and she gets it within a couple seconds. I call my friend in FL, and in two seconds we are talking on the phone. I know. I am wondering, too.
It was reported earlier that Arnold spoke with President Bush at about 2pm PST.
That report is Horse SH%T, take it to the bank.......
Sorry, I didn't mean it to think that it happen in our lifetime.
DC-10 did a drop on Lake Arrowhead fire approx 1715 hrs. It looked like he was too high and the winds scattered the Phoscheck.
Haven’t seen him since
If that were me I would find a hotel room somewhere until morning. Take what you can that’s important and go. Of course, as I’ve said before I’m a plan ahead kind of person.
If they feel where they are is safe then I guess it’s ok. But the weather service said the wind will not die down over night, so the fire can go any direction.
By 9am yesterday, wifey and I were both thinking about "Stage Two" of all this stuff....the winter rains, and ensuing goo that will re-disaster many of these areas.
