UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Just read your posting in more detail. She is west of Rancho Bernardo ? The news reporter asked a fire chief with a convoy of 5 to 6 engines where the open flames were in Rancho Bernardo. The fire Chief said he did not know and was trying to find them. Not much help for your situation, but obviously no one really knows the true situation of that area right now. Very fluid and tonight if the winds die down we could see fires going in random directions.

I just spoke to CAluvdubya and she and her family are OK, they evacuated to a friends house.
Just talked to a friend in Carlsbad. She said she is packing up the car, the dog and her MIL. Please say some prayers for her, her name is Claudia. Thank you so much.

My daughter called me from Cal Stae San Bernardino - they closed the campus and she and her roommates drown down to one of their parent’s house in Temecula. She said the smoke was so bad you couldn’t even see the mountains - and the campus is right up against the base of Arrowhead mountain! I was a little nervous, but she said it is much clearer now down in Temecula - they are between the fires now...

Scripps Ranch (The area devestated in the Cedar fire) is under mandatory evacuation. Everything to the north of Miramar being evacuated. Miramar, so far, doesn’t seem to be. Tierrasanta (another area hit last time that also has a lot of military housing) so far is fine. Not sure who it was they’re talking about military wise that’s really being evacuated at the moment.
Is that on Coronado or?? elsewhere? I thought the fire was north of SD proper. The cable news channels have had sketchy to poor coverage on this.
I do miss the LA news, that's for sure.

Yeah... the smoke is bad everywhere. I’m getting ashes from the Malibu fire (I’m about 20 miles south).
My mom said she can’t see the top of the hill behind her home (and that is less than 100 yards away) from smoke of the Witch Creek fire in San Diego.
Freep mail me street name, etc.. I’m from the RB area and have people still with contact up there. Yes, she’s likely threatened.
Basically here’s the thing. We had a fire go through RB this morning/current and it’s going west, but it seems to have gone more due west than anything (through Del Dios Highway, etc.). It made RB seem more stable at the moment.
Now, RB is being threatened AGAIN but from the east, by a fire that is also heading into Poway/Scripps Ranch. Their concern is that they need to stop the fire from hitting RB from the east, or it’ll sweep through again, and then things between there and the coast are REALLY in trouble.
Honestly, if she’s anywhere between 56 and 78 (to the south and north) she’s threatened...as much as that is horrible to say. Tell her to have her stuff ready to go and make sure that someone is there to assist her.
We thought I was pretty safe and wouldnt’ need to evac until midday today. I left with under 10 minutes this morning from RB with flames in my complex. She needs to be prepared.

This is really horrible. Even though I don’t live in California any more I will always call it my home since I lived there most of my life.

Evacuations Largest In Region’s History
Fallbrook, Valley Center Under Mandatory Evacuations

SAN DIEGO — The largest community evacuations in San Diego County’s history were under way Monday as two massive fires continued to push through the region, devastating neighborhood after neighborhood.
Fallbrook is now under a mandatory evacuation. Evacuations are beginning on the eastern half of Fallbrook; from Insterstate 15 east to Live Oak Park Road, to Gird Road, and East Mission Road to the north and San Luis Rey River to the south.
Valley Center is also under a mandatory evacuation. Evacuations are beginning in a large area of Valley Center, near the Bear Valley area. Valley Center High School is the evacuation center. Residents in Valley Center should play close attention to news reports because of the serious fire threats.
Residents living north of State Route 56, west of Interstate 15 and east of Interstate 5 were advised to pack up and clear out of their homes, even before receiving a phone call directing them to do so.
By late morning, authorities had issued 120,000 reverse 911 phone calls, under a system that informs people about evacuation plans. Unofficial estimates put the number of evacuated people at as many as a quarter-million.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who declared a state of emergency Sunday afternoon in San Diego and a handful of other Southern California counties, announced his intention to visit the stricken region today to survey the damage.
San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman announced that help was on the way in the form of 1,000 fire engines, coming from all over. Her department was stretched thin, with 360 firefighters and 75 engine companies working the fire, leaving only 40 personnel to handle any other emergency that might present itself.
Officials had no precise count of lost homes, but County Fire Coordinator Chief Bill Metcalfe said the areas with the most damage were the southern portions of Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, north Poway and the 4S Ranch area.
Sheriff Bill Kolender stressed that people should limit their cellular telephone use to prevent system overloads that could hamper emergency communications.
The sheriff also urged people to promptly obey evacuation orders, noting that some firefighters were called off the front lines overnight to herd people out of harm’s way.
“Realize that your life is more important than any property you have,” Kolender said.
Two of the two biggest blazes burning in the county — the Witch Creek and San Pasqual Valley fires — merged this morning, creating a unified front in the North County.
Two other blazes, the Coronado Valley Fire and the Rice Canyon Fire in Fallbrook, had died down as of midday. Metcalfe stressed, however, that those fires were not out and could begin burning in earnest again, depending on the winds.
Together, the two biggest blazes — the Witch Creek Fire and the so-called Harris Fire, which was burning near the border — had scorched a total of about 30,000 acres by midmorning. Both were burning out of control.
“The situation is worse than any of us could have imagined,” Metcalfe said.
Mayor Jerry Sanders urged residents of potentially affected areas to “have your car packed right now.”
Residents were told to go to Qualcomm Stadium if headed east or to the Del Mar fairgrounds if headed west.
The mayor’s office put out a call the public to help provide for the evacuees at the Friars Road sports arena. The following items, which should be taken to the stadium’s “P” gate, are needed: tents, cots, water, blankets and prepared food.
No definitely NOT Coronado. People are being sent TO Coronado! Honestly, only south of about Miramar and west of 15 is untouched in anyway. East of 15 is the original Harris fire, and now we’ve got 8 or so in everything north there...from the coast all the way out beyond Julian.
