BAHRAIN is entering the nuclear age, His Majesty King Hamad declared yesterday. It is working with its GCC neighbours to introduce nuclear energy to benefit the economy and citizens, the King said as he opened the second session of the National Assembly's second term.

Bahrain must keep up with global change and new technology if it is to continue to grow and benefit its people, he said. He promised to speed up housing projects and improve health and education services as the country's economy booms.

Better training to bring Bahraini skills up to international levels and more aid for people in need also top the government's agenda, the King told the gathering, at the National Assembly complex in Gudaibiya.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and BDF Commander-in-Chief Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Ruling Family members, clergymen, ministers, governors, businessmen, senior government officials, municipal councillors, diplomats, parliament and Shura Council members and others.

In the short term, this makes sense. In the long term, this isn’t necessarily the best course of action as the moderate Sunni Al-Khalifa royal family are none-to-popular amongst the Bahraini Shi’ite commonfolk.

So #1 on the to-do list is join other Arabic countries in the quest for "peaceful" nuclear reactors. Trying to keep up with the Mohammeds must be difficult.

How about trying to become the only Arabic country with a world-class hospital? How about even importing DeVry Institute instructors to teach some of them how to change light bulbs without calling for a foreign-born servant? Sigh.......

FWIW:

Bahrain is one of the most advanced countries in the ME. Quite typical of most of the gulf states, really.
