“A still shawm, a precursor of the modern oboe, was also found on the ship. Something that had been written about in accounts of the time could now be reconstructed and played. It sounds rather like a kazoo.”
Won’t be buying one of those anytime soon.
Very interesting article. Thanks for posting.
Of the military finds, Capt Page is most struck by the longbows on board - measuring “in the order of 6ft”.
“I had it in my own mind that longbows had been phased out by then. There were so few in existence, from the era before the Mary Rose, you realise these were extremely powerful weapons and required great strength and specialism to use them.”
The jpg I posted showed the Mary Rose had ...
250 bows of yew.
Bowstrings 6 gross.
Livery arrows in sheaves 400.
Shawms
This brings to mind another british ship that over turned and sank in the Thames. This ship was Henry the Eighth’s pride and joy. They over loaded the deck with cannons and what not, it went belly up...they learned the hard way that the c.g. MUST be below the c.b.(center of buoyancy).
Again, in WWII we let the japanese “steal” some ship plans. Knowing their habit of precise copying, we knew they would build it exactly the way the plans said. Sure enough, out it goes into the harbor, flips over, and bellyup to the bottom. Do you laugh or cry at such stupidity?
went to see the mary rose last time i was in the uk. was amazed by how many bows and arrows were on board and recovered. sure would have liked to have one of the bows. the men that used them had their left arms malformed from using them for so long. the museum was very interesting and would recommend it.
She told us about how she accidentally erased the tape.
