On Coulter, Christians, And Jews

On Donny Deutch's television talk show earlier this week, Ann Coulter honestly answered "yes" when asked by Deutch if she believes that this country "would be better if we were all Christian."  She further stated that Christians "just want Jews to be perfected," i.e., to accept Jesus Christ as their lord and savior.  (The full transcript is here .)

Let the outrage begin!

Deutch, a liberal Jew, accused Coulter of making "hateful" and "anti-Semitic" remarks.

Michael Savage, host of one of the most popular conservative talk radio shows, and also a Jew, likewise accused Coulter of anti-Semitism, and called her a "deranged hag" for good measure.

I must say that Savage's comments surprised me, because he has been one of the strongest voices in recent years against the cult of "political correctness."  And what is Coulter's crime in this case?  Not that she is an anti-Semite.  This is absurd.  I seriously doubt that either Savage or Deutch truly believes that Coulter "hates" Jews.  Rather, Coulter's crime is that she violated one of PC's most sacred taboos:  Expressing belief in the correctness of one's religion.  The only thing worse than this in PC land is asserting the superiority of one's race. 

Well, at least when it comes to white Christians.  For the rules of PC do not apply equally to all.  They do not apply to Jews or blacks or women (except to the extent these groups express "conservative" points of view).  The strictures and penalties of PC only apply to the majority of the American people, as well as to the Founding Fathers who established this great country, and to the many generations of overwhelmingly white Christian Americans who built this nation into the freest, richest, and most powerful country on earth, and defended our country through several bloody wars against its enemies, foreign and domestic. 

The ideology of PC is anti-American to its core.  Its fundamental purpose is not to ensure that "minority" Americans share more fully in the American Dream.  Its goal is to tear apart this nation -- its people, its culture, its history -- root and branch, and replace it with a miasma of atheism, socialism, and multiculturalism.  To see Michael Savage acting the part of PC police is stunning.     

Moreover, for Jews of any political persuasion to take offense at Coulter's comments strikes me as deeply ignorant and immature.  Do Jews truly expect Christians to pretend that they do not believe in the teachings of their religion?  Why?  Because so many Jews have discarded the teachings of their own religion?  (I myself am a secular Jew.)  The "logic" at work here seems to be that, because so many Jews can imagine, along with John Lennon, a world in which "there's no heaven" and "no religion too," it is offensive and outrageous for other folks to disagree with this sanitized vision of the future.  Many Christians, however, still believe in their religion, still believe it is the path to eternal salvation, and fail to appreciate what is so wonderful about the fairy tale world invoked in Lennon's song.  From a PC perspective, this makes them "insensitive" and "bigoted" and "hateful."

I say, thank god that so many Christians in this country still believe in their religion!  That is the only thing that will prevent the violent and tyrannical expansion of the Muslim world.  And that is the only thing that will preserve the existence of the Jewish people.

As a Jew, I recognize, with painful humility, that the existence of my person, my people, lies at the mercy of the larger, stronger peoples in whose midst we live.  To deny this fact is to deny reality.  Not too long ago, the people of Nazi Germany, along with their allies and collaborators, attempted to eradicate the Jewish people once and for all.  The Final Solution they called it.  They nearly succeeded.  But while the Germans and Poles and Dutch and French and the many others who participated in this obscene massacre were Christians, it was not their Christianity that impelled them to these acts.  It was the vicious political ideology of the Nazis.  This is what triggered the Holocaust.

The truth is that the Jews of Europe could not have saved themselves from Hitler's rampage.  Practically every Jew alive today owes his or her existence to the fact that Hitler was defeated by the brave and virtuous troops of the Anglo-American alliance, practically all of whom were Christians too.  Could FDR and Churchill and the rest of the western leaders have done more to help the Jews, both before and during the war?  Perhaps.  (Forget what the Soviets could have done; their moral corruption ran almost as deep as the Nazis'.)  But I refuse to play that despicable blame game.  I simply am grateful for the good people of this country, who made for my grandparents and parents, and now for me, the best home on earth that Jews have ever enjoyed.      

Today, the leaders of Iran -- the most powerful Islamic nation, with aspirations of regional, indeed world, domination -- speak openly of eliminating the state of Israel, i.e., the largest concentration of Jews outside of the United States.  Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has vowed repeatedly to "wipe Israel off the map."  Just this week, the former president of Iran, Hashemi Rafsanjani (often referred to as a "moderate"), commented during a sermon (yes, during a religious service)  that the Nazis "saved" Europe from the evils of Zionism.  In other words, the Nazis did Europe a favor by murdering six million Jews.  Where was the outrage from western leftists?  Where were the screams of protest from liberal Jews?  What will these idiots say when the nuclear bombs start falling on Israel?  Probably that Israel caused it, or could have prevented it, or even deserved it.  The mere existence of the Jewish state will be deemed sufficient justification for its total destruction.  My stomach is sick with the thought of how easily Muslim genocide of Jews will be excused, even by Jews themselves.

Make no mistake, New York City -- i.e., "Jew York City" -- will be next.  Destroy Israel and New York City, and most of the world's remaining Jews will be dead.  When this day comes, a substantial part of the Muslim world will be cheering, just as they cheered the destruction of the World Trade Towers on 9/11.

But measured by the amount of heat and vitriol her comments generated, the real enemy apparently is Ann Coulter.  How dare she assert the truth of her religion?  True or not, I know that Christianity is far preferable to Islam.  Would Donny Deutch and Michael Savage and all of the other critics who are blasting Coulter rather live in a Muslim country?  One does not have to be a scholar of the world's religions (and I am not) to know the answer to that question. 

This is the real choice facing Jews in this country, and even in Israel.  John Lennon's fantasy of universal peace and love and brotherhood does not exist, and never will exist.  The fate of the world's Jews, and Christians for that matter, ultimately depends on the ability and willingness of the Christian West, especially the United States, to prevail in the steadily intensifying struggle we are witnessing across the globe between Islam and Christianity. 

What Deutch and Savage and the other critics fail to understand is that only a Christian people who truly believes in the correctness, indeed superiority, of their religion will be able to win this fight.  A secularized people who believes in nothing but watery principles of tolerance and democracy inevitably will succumb to the combination of violent Islamic intimidation and the "nondiscriminatory" imperatives of their own multicultural worldview.  If sharia ever does come to the United States, I am quite certain that its handmaidens will be atheists and liberals, not believing Christians.

As a Jew living in this great country, I have no doubt who my enemies are, and who are my allies.  And I know to which group Ann Coulter belongs.

PIUS XII AND THE HOLOCAUST, Truth vs. Myth

One of the greatest yet, undeservedly controversial figures of the XX Century was without a doubt Pius XII-an extraordinary man who had been revered by many but maligned by others. Consequentially some of his achievements have remained relatively unknown.

He played an important role during the most convulsive and bloody period in the history of mankind. We must find out how Pius XII, as the head of the Catholic Church, coped with the persecution and annihilation of whole ethnic and religious groups by the Nazis.

Thanks to Pius XII, more than a million Jews were saved by the Catholic Church during the Holocaust.

Franco offers refuge in Spain to persecuted Jews.

The weak reaction of the Western democracies during the Holocaust was in stark contrast with that of “Fascist” Spain. General Franco’s regime, even though his country was devastated and impoverished after a bloody civil war, recognized all the Sephardic Jews living in the Nazi occupied territories as Spanish citizens. That measure allowed them to return to Spain- the beloved Sepharad, land of their ancestors where they lived a golden age more than five centuries ago. Franco’s government also collaborated with the Holy See and several South American countries in providing false passports for Jews trying to flee the Nazi scourge. More than 50,000 Jews were saved thanks to the Spanish government actions. When the Nazis discovered the covert operation, some of the Latin American countries retracted from accepting the validity of the faked passports. The Vatican, on January 24, 1944, interceded with the Latin American governments asking them to recognize the passports “no matter how illegally obtained”, and the humanitarian operation proceeded. Brazil gave 3,000 enter visas. Paraguay, Chile and others South American countries were also very receptive to the Pope’s pleas in favor of the Jews.

Israeli senior diplomat and now Orthodox Jewish Rabbi, Pinchas Lapide, with access to Yad Vashem’s archives, has stated in his book, “Three Popes and the Jews”, that “The Catholic Church relief and rescue program under the pontificate of Pius XII was instrumental in saving the lives of as many as 860,000 Jews from certain death at Nazi’s hands. That was more than all other Churches, religious institutions and international rescue organizations put together.” (17) The Israelis recognized the lives saved by planting a forest, in commemoration, of as many trees in the Negeb, SE of Jerusalem. This forest was shown to Pope Paul VI during his first state visit to Israel.

At the end of the War, the World Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Committee, Albert Einstein, and many other prominent Jewish leaders expressed their deep gratitude toward Pius XII and the Catholic Church. On the death of Pius XII (1958), Golda Meir, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, gave a heartfelt eulogy for the Pope before the UN Assembly.

In his scholar book, “The Last Three Popes and the Jews”, Lapide said that Pius XII was one of the few world leaders outside the Jewry itself who was quick to recognize the danger of Nazism. Lapide demonstrates convincingly the consistent and active protection provided to the Jews in Europe by the papacy. In Lapide’s words:

“When armed force ruled well-nigh omnipotent, and morality was at its lowest ebb, Pius XI commanded non of the former and could only appeal to the latter, in confronting with bare hands, the full might of evil.
A sounding protest, which might turn out to be self-thwarting-or quiet piecemeal rescue? Loud words- or prudent deeds? The dilemma must have been sheer agony, for whichever course he chose horrible consequences were inevitable. Unable to cure the sickness of an entire civilization, and unwilling to bear the brunt of Hitler’s fury, the Pope, unlike many far mightier than he, alleviated, relieved, appealed, petitioned-and saved as most efficient he could by his own lights.
Who, but a prophet or a martyr could have done much more?
The Talmud teaches us that ‘whoever preserves one life, it is accounted to him by Scripture as if he had preserved a whole world.’
If this is true-and it is as true as that of most Jewish of tenets, the sanctity of human life-then Pius XII deserves that forest in Judean hills, which kindly people of Israel proposed for him in October 1958. A memorial forest with 860,000 trees.” (Emphasis added. “Three Popes and the Jews.” pp.267-269)

Even before 1944, the world Jewish organizations had recognized in the Vatican a friend who was willing- and often able- to help their people during their tragic ordeal in occupied Europe. The concerns of the Jewish organizations were also those of the Holy See. Sometimes The Church acted on the appeal of a Jewish organization, at other times, they acted on the basis of reports received from its own representatives in the occupied territories where they held a relationship of confidence with the local Jewish leaders. In many instances, the Holy See had already acted upon information received from its own nuncios before the appeals from Jewish organizations arrived at the Vatican.

In 1944 the War Refugee Board came into existence as the united effort of several American Jewish organizations. During and after the war, the War Refugee Board publicly acknowledged its close relationship with the Holy See. The documentation includes the correspondence from eminent rabbinical leaders who made special appeals to the Holy See; among them are the Grand Rabbi of Jerusalem, Dr. Issac Herzog; the Grand Rabbi of the British Empire, Dr. Joseph Hertz; and Rabbi Abraham Kalmanowitz, leader of the rabbinical school of Mir, in Lithuania.

Fr. William Saunders has quoted Dr. Raphael Cantoni, a leader in Italy’s Jewish Assistance Committee, declaring that “The Church and the Papacy have saved Jews as much and insofar as they could Christians. Six million of my co-religionists have been murdered by the Nazis…but there would have been many more victims had it not been for the efficacious intervention of Pius XII.” (25)

Among those who mourned the death of Pius XII pronouncing heartfelt tributes were the President of Israel Ben-Zevi, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress and the World Zionist Organization, and many Rabbis including Dr. Israel Goldstein of New York. Rabbi Elio Toaff, Chief Rabbi of Rome, said: “More than anyone else, we have had the opportunity to appreciate the great kindness, filled with compassion and magnanimity, that the Pope displayed during the terrible years of persecution and terror, when it seemed that there was no hope left for us.” Rabbi Israel Zolli stated: “What the Vatican did will indelibly and eternally engraved in our hearts…Priests and even high prelates did things that will forever be an honor to Catholicism.” (29)

Exactly right! I believe MY religion (Orthodox Christianity (Russian)) is the right and correct one and I don't expect everyone to agree but bottom line I do believe that MY Faith is THE Faith....and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

But to this I say, remember who it is who actually selects our leaders:

So if we don't want our land ruled over by the basest of men (or women), pray.
Humble ourselves and pray.

With respect to Ann Coulter. Yes, she is not a pastor. Nonetheless, I commend her that when being pushed she did not retreat into the land of 'PC' that seems to govern all our dialog.
Its 'ok' for wiccans, and satanists (amongst whom I include the islamics) to say what they please, but Christians must bite their tongues lest they be considered 'offensive'.
The preaching of the Cross is offensive.
To them that perish it is foolishness.
But to us that are saved it is the power of God.
And IF we truly love our neighbors we're going to want to share these words. So no, I'm not going to criticize Miss Coulter. Even IF it were to result in a lost election, there are more important things to be gained. I don't know her motivation, some claim she was just trying to stir the pot to drum up book sales, but from where I stand it seems that she was just unapologetically stating what she believed.
Good for her, for not being ashamed of declaring the Truth.

Back when I was a Christian, it was taught that Christians owe a debt of gratitude to the Jews. Jews were the one people who through G-d’s grace, and their own study of Torah, were holy enough that G-d could send his Messiah.

This is true, only because the Jews were Monotheistic and did indeed worship the one true God that promised them that he would deliver them a Messiah. Then when God fufilled his bargin of delivering a Messiah, the Jews (with the exception of his deciples and followers) promptly rejected him.

As far as Ann comments that Christians "just want Jews to be perfected," i.e., to accept Jesus Christ as their lord and savior, what harm is done to the Jewish faith? In the end, all knees shall bend and all tongues will proclaim Christ as the son of God! Philippians 2:9-11

We're not seeing the worst of it in television political talk and discussion threads. It's far worse between individuals, face-to-face, in smaller groups. I was a Christian, until the latest passion play was disseminated in 2004, and am knowledgeable of what they say between themselves.

It goes further back than pre-WII Germany. The same propaganda was used by the ancient Romans.

you don’t have to bite your tongue but I have a different approach with atheists (or more specifically: misotheists), paganists and hateful islamists on the one hand and christians, mormons, bahais and sikhs on the other. I understand that many christians believe it is their religious duty to convert everyone else but if that was what Ann was trying to do, she has a very strange way of doing it.

I think that this quote from you post captured the actual intent of Coulter’s remarks and that’s why she refused to back down or soften her words.

From a historical perspective, not only is Christianity derived from Judiasm, but the earliest Christians actually considered themselves a Jewish sect. The Apostles always were Jews, and Christ was their Rabbi. Now, fifteen percent of the population of the Roman Empire was Jewish at that time. So it’s not difficult to imagine that the early “converts” to Christianity that came from this group probably saw themselves as following a different Rabbi.

The Christians gradually ceased to identify entirely with “other Jews” as Christianity spread people of pagan origin and eventually because of the anti-semitism arising out of the idea that “the Jews killed Jesus”.
