Any number of things. Auto parts, with lots of plastics. Wal-Mart truck with almost anything on board. Sounds like they cannot get water/foam on it to settle it down. Lots of it will just have to burn out. Fuel in trucks could be over 200 gallons each. X 15 could make alot of fire.

I happened to be watching KABC last night, right at 11:29 when they said "oh, there's a catastrophic multi-rig accident and fire that's closed the I-5 in both directions. We'll tell you about it tomorrow. Good night!" So inflexible. They're useless.
I tuned in to watch Crouching Dallas deliver the weather, in case anyone was wondering why I bother. :)
Have you heard any scanner info about the Angeles Crest? It's going to be really trafficky between here and La Canada/Pasadena until this gets cleared up on the 5.

They are reporting things burned beyond recognition so they can’t tell if they are looking at trailers or what.
The accident occurred at the I-5/SR 14 junction, right where the “being study” arrow is pointing.

Except for in the Senate and the Courts nothing ever gets resolved in a realistic time.
