Per LA County Fire....Northbound I-5 is collapsing at the scene of a major accident in the truck tunnel.

I signed off FR last night before this occurred so it’s all news to me as of an hour or so ago. It must have been a terrible fright last night, and surely traffic will be badly snagged today. News radio is updating listeners as to alternative routes. I found this excerpt at Fox News, don’t know how current:

***Although the tunnel is designed to carry truck traffic through a mountain pass area, Hurd said passenger cars may also use it, raising concerns that some may be trapped inside.

“We’re going to have to do a very methodical search,” Deputy Chief John Tripp told KABC-TV said. “There could be unfortunately more people that were not able to escape.”

Authorities said eight had minor injuries and two had moderate injuries, ranging from moderate burns to neck and back injuries. All 10 injured were taken to local hospitals.

The intense heat caused concrete to crack and melt, sending chucks falling onto the road below throughout the night. Firefighters worried that the damage could cause parts of the tunnel to collapse.***

Report Faults 2 Drivers In Fiery Tunnel Crash

Published: May 26, 1982

A bus driver's inattention and excessive speed combined with a drunken driver's disabled vehicle caused the explosion that killed seven persons in the Caldecott Tunnel last month, a California Highway Patrol report said today. Sgt. Jim Miller, leader of the accident investigation team, said that an AC Transit bus driver,

John Dykes, 55 years old, of Oakland, had tried to pass an 8,800 gallon gasoline tanker truck.

But when he got around the truck he encountered the disabled foreign sedan driven by Janice M. Ferris, 34, of San Leandro, which apparently had hit the tunnel wall and stalled. Mr. Dykes, traveling at 60 miles an hour, swerved to avoid the car and hit the tanker truck, which eventually overturned, ruptured and caught fire, according to Sergeant Miller.

An AC Transit lawyer, Gerald P. Martin, said the bus driver was not at fault. Besides Miss Ferris and Mr. Dykes, the explosion on April 7 killed five other persons.

I never did find out exactly what happened, because I’d moved to SoCal by then and it wasn’t exactly front page news down there. (Not to mention we didn’t have the internet back then in the DARK AGES.)

My little sister had passed through the Caldecott Tunnel just 30 minutes before it happened. Scary.

There’s a reporter on KNX reporting from the 14 freeway (aka parking lot). The Caltrans overhead sign says ‘three right lanes blocked,’ but southbound is technically open — backup begins at Placerita Cyn. Sounds like northbound, you’re out of luck from the I-5. He’s going on and on about the 26 and such but I can’t follow it very easily.

Where exactly is the wreck? North of the I-5/14 interchange, sounds like..

Well I was guilty of chit chatting but I did end my posting night with an update for the folks coming aboard on the East Coast.

I assume most of us who live oppistie times day/night who come on to a new to us long thread will read the story then the first 25posts and if the thread is in the hundreds you go to the last hundred zone and work your way back for details if there is a lot of filler in the middle.
