Washington, D.C. (October 10, 2007) -- DIRECTV today added four High-Definition channels, bringing its national HD channel total to 45 (including the four local networks).
The new channels are: MGM HD (channel 255); Food Network HD (231-1); National Geographic HD (276) and CNBC HD+ (355)
DIRECTV says it will offer 70 HD channels by month's end and up to 100 high-def channels by the end of the year.
The satcaster started the HD expansion in September with the addition of 21 new High-Definition channels.
EchoStar, the nation's second leading satellite service, this week claimed that it's still the HD leader with 48 national high-def channels.
However, EchoStar's list includes eight HD PPV channels.
Ping
That’s nice. When will they offer C-SPAN 3?
A moot point with me as I have no phone line but does DirecTV offer all of the HD channels as part of a package or are they ala carte?
I don’t have a phone line either. That has nothing to do with getting DirecTV or HD. When I ordered I told them I only had cell phone service at home and no land line. They were happy to give me a waiver. The phone line connection is only for billing of pay-per-view movies. I have a blockbuster online account so I don’t use that.
Yep.
Anyone know why Fox News is in HD ONLY for Fox News Sunday on their local HD affiliates? They obviously have the equipment, why don’t they have their own HD cable channel?
I have one tivo box connected to my phone line, but the other tivo box in another room is not connected and works just fine. My daughter doesn’t have her tivo box connected to the phone line either in her house. She didn’t tell Direct TV about it and it works fine also.
I'm beginning to get po'd with my cable company (Brighthouse) as they have few HD channels and the few you can get in addition to the broadcast networks don't belong to a tier but in their own HD package.
The newer receivers appear to be able to "phone home" via internet, if you want to hook them up that way.
Also, as long as you pay the extra for HD service (~$10/month), you get the HD channels for whatever tier of service you've otherwise purchased. The only exception, as far as I know, is the NFL Sunday Ticket package, which requires the "superfan" add-on ($99) to get HD.
Package deal. One mothly price gives you all of the High Def, except for the HBOs, Showtimes, Stars, etc. of course. Subscribers to the HBO package, for example, will automatically get the High Def versions of the HBO channels if they have DirecTV’s High Def service.

I only have extended cable - Cox Cable to be exact. If it weren’t for Fox news, Discover, Travel, History, and Lifetime, I wouldn’t even have extended cable. Cox Cable sucks and the other channels suck. I have mixed feelings, though, because I miss the great stations COX first started with that you now have to purchase extra and would love to be able to get them again, but, I also feel that I pay too much for cable now. So, I guess I’ll just go on missing....
After Hurricane Ivan MediaCom ignored my calls about their line flopping around on the highway everytime a debris truck passed (that is what initally knocked it down). So after 3 weeks and one phone call we had DirecTV in a few hours. Love it. Getting PPV college games via our local MediaCom was like pulling teeth.

$6.00 per month (on top of the $9.99 a month for the HD DVR)
The satalite people will always tell you that, but my daughter had an honest installer that told her he didn't have his hooked up and it worked just fine. He told her just to tell the Direct tv people that is was connected. Somehow the programs and tivo are always updated anyway and work fine. We get notices on our tv that we aren't connected, but we just ignore them. Had it that way for over a year now.
$6.00 per month (on top of the $9.99 a month for the HD DVR)
I pay $53 per month just for extended COX. So, you’re getting a bargin right?
Brighthouse ships this HD DVR with a puny 160GB hard drive. It *has* a connector on the back to allow an external hard drive to be connected thereby increasing storage space. However, for whatever reason Brighthouse does NOT activate that port. Many other cable companies with this DVR (Scientific American 8800) do.
Meanwhile they just tell us there are no plans to activate the port or expand our storage space.
Actually, I guess it's just as well we don't have more HD channels because I couldn't record them anyhow!

Now I don’t feel sorry I have to pay $53 for mostly junk. I fell sorry for you cause you pay twice as much for junk.
I guess it’s all up to what we willing to put up with for what we get in the long run. I just sit back and remember the golden days when cable first came out, they needed our money and the stations were great!
