Reid gets warm reception at BYU
The Deseret News ^ | October 10, 2007 | Tad Walsh

PROVO — Some past prominent LDS Church leaders wrongly pressed conservatism on church members, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday during a press conference at Brigham Young University.

The Nevada senator attacked President Bush and evangelical Christians while saying members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints need to worry less about abortion and gay marriage and more about health care, global warming, education and jobs.

Reid first spent 40 minutes delivering a well-received and sometimes tender BYU forum speech in the Marriott Center to 4,091 students, faculty, staff and visitors. He described a journey from an underprivileged, non-religious childhood in tiny Searchlight, Nev., to his position as the highest-ranking Mormon in American government.

"Democrats have not always been in the (church's) minority, and I believe we won't be for too long," he said.

He elaborated during a harder-hitting, 12-minute press conference. "The best missionary we have for that is George Bush," he said. "People are switching parties all over the country."

Reid said Ezra Taft Benson, active in very conservative politics before he became a president of the LDS Church, and Ernest L. Wilkinson, the president of BYU from 1951-71, were among past church leaders "who were very right-wing people politically."

Bloated, corrupt, valueless Republicans are driving idealistic youth from the party. They need something to believe in.

We need another Reagan to cast a positive Republican vision for the future that youth can sink their teeth into.

What a condescending little prick, that Reid of a man.
I am not LDS but I am offended by the way he talked to BYU.
How embarrassing for LDS that this man touts himself so highly.
One question, where is the outrage from the leadership of LDS against this man?
Or the rank and file LDS?

That may be right, especially in the case of Hatch and Bennett of Utah, however, Reid is not the answer for the idealists. These same naive youth at BYU will vote for Romney because he's a pretty boy with good hair. Clinton all over again!

“I really wish Hatch and Bennett had the guts to challenge him openly.”

Have you ever wondered why Hatch has been so low keyed and inoffensive his whole career? Good Manners? Perhaps. Butt, I have wondered about this many times. Butt, as a leading conservative senator from one of the most conservate states, he has always been “very quiet” and “very reluctant” about taking on the liberals. In fact, at times it appears that senator Teddy owns him.
Anyway, something to mull over, especially for those conservatives from Utah I would think...

I too am puzzled by that. As I read the letters to the editor of the Deseret News it seems the libs are taking over. And to believe this commie Reid? I just don't get it. To think he had the gall to besmirch Ezra Taft Benson and get away with it is very troubling.

Hatch=RINO Kennedy ass kisser. Like many ascending Mormons, their inferiority complex causes serious pandering to the elites, with thinking that they might be able to be their equals. Trouble is they get slaughtered behind their backs. Hatch is to me the laughing stock of DC.

Reid is an apostate, in my opinion. I am shocked that BYU would let him anywhere near the place. That he disrespected President Ezra Taft Benson is something that I cannot abide. He has certainly revealed that he is an enemy of truth.

Post mormon in NM welcome you as well and thanks for an excellent post at #19 especially this comment “Our greatest calling on earth is to fight evil. If we don’t fight it, we’re in spiritual trouble. If we help it, as the Church does with Reid, it’s worse.”

IMHO you can’t be a Mormon and a Democrat; the two are mutually exclusive. Harry needs to be ex-communicated. He also should resign from the Senate, after his shameful attack on Rush.

You really have to call Harry a Leftist/Socialist. There have been decent Utah Democrats in the past. Matter of fact I have several Utah Democratic friends that are more conservative than me. They might be misguided at times but to the man, they all agree that Reid is an asshole that needs to be dealt with.

Agreed....for example note the often posted link here to the "Famous Mormons" website...

Where else can you find, in one listing, "Famous Mormons in Rugby" "Famous Mormons in Wrestling" Famous Mormons in Rodeo and Horseracing" "Famous Mormons in Boxing, Karate and Body Building" AND, ROTFL, "Celebrities RUMORED to be Mormon"?

Celebrities Rumored to be Mormon

The Democrat party is Pro-Abortion and Anti-Christian. How do you sign up for that? I think your friends are confused.

I agree. Not just looks, but vision, a real, meaty, positive vision for the future. We’re not giving that right now and we will suffer at the margins for it.

From the article: The Nevada senator attacked President Bush and evangelical Christians...Reid first spent 40 minutes delivering a well-received and sometimes tender BYU forum speech in the Marriott Center to 4,091 students, faculty, staff and visitors...Reid also told reporters the Republican Party has been driven by evangelical Christians for 20 years. "They are the most anti-Christian people I can imagine, the people from the Christian far right."

Ah, one of the real reasons BYU was giving Reid such a platform: Just the latest LDS leader to publicly ridicule and attack Evangelical Christians, a tradition started by Joseph Smith.

Reid: "I am a Democrat because I am a Mormon, not in spite of it," he said.

I guess that says it all, eh?
