Analysis: Thompson sticks to script

The newcomer to the Republican presidential field didn't stand out in his first debate of the 2008 race but he didn't blow it either.

An intense spat between GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani over taxes and spending took some of the focus - and the heat - off Thompson and overshadowed the other six Republicans on stage; Thompson was literally stuck between the two as they sparred.

"I've enjoyed watching these fellas. I gotta admit it was getting a little boring without me, but I'm glad to be here now," Thompson said - and by the end of the two hours, it showed.

The debate was an important test of Thompson's maturity as a candidate and he largely held his own.

A late entry to the race who has stumbled, Thompson was looking to counter the perception that he's unprepared to be president.

“Maybe we should vote for Mitt’s lawyer and eliminate the middle man.”

That was excellent, and I thought it should be repeated. Thanks.

Hey, you can vote for anybody you like, but I wonder if you made the same statement in 2004 before voting for Bush who also consulted his attorneys in 2001 and 2003? I highly doubt it. Just more double standards for Romney around here. He outshines everyone on the stage with his intellect, demeanor and delivery and I guess people who support others feel this need to nitpick and find things to complain about it. Just petty and transparent.

If a president wishes to consult attorneys, that is fine by me. But that was a terribly wrong answer for Mitt to give to voters. He could have said attorney general or something, or Secretary of Defense, or National Security adviser and it would have come off better. It sounded like he didn’t understand the question and was fishing around for an answer. Mitt is not my idea of what a chief executive should be.

He doesn’t have to give all the details. The way he explained it was just dead wrong.

If he’d given a better answer, y’all wouldn’t have to be explaining what he meant.

We need a President who talks to the Joint Chiefs first, not some lawyer. It’s a national defense operation, not a CYA operation.

And YOU have been told that Rituximab is often used without chemotherapy.

You are spreading false information.

"BS. Your claim is false. Fred has not had chemo."

From the WaPo article:

"Thompson initially got only radiation therapy on the site of the original lump. When several other nodes became enlarged a few months later, however, he opted to have treatment with rituximab, an antibody that targets B-cells to be killed by the immune system."

To what do you attribute your above dumb@$$ statement?

  1. Too lazy to read the article...

  2. Incapable of comprehending English...

  3. Too stubborn to admit error...

  4. Hyper FredInfatuation...

  5. Dumb as a rock...

  6. All of the above...

it would have come off better.

Well, if that is what you are worried about the most -- how it comes off. Sheesh. I thought we should never by worrying about style over substance around here? Everyone knows exactly what he meant. Of course, he will consult with the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General and his entire cabinet in addition to his legal team before making any decisions regarding war and peace. The fact that so many of you think that presidents don't seek legal counsel routinely leaves me thinking you all are pretty naive.

It comes down to giving voters an answer they can understand in a public debate. Explaining things in an understandable way.

I’m not worried about how Mitt comes off because I don’t support him. I also don’t need to explain what he says after he says it which I guess his campaign might be doing that tomorrow, or not.

It is substance when the first thing that comes out of his mouth is lawyers, when he ought to be thinking generals, joint chiefs, national security adviser in extreme circumstances. It is an indication maybe he isn’t up to the responsibilities he’s asking for.

You are correct in what you said. Romney doesn’t get it, what is most important. I agree.

I was dealing with something else in my post, as in it wasn’t a good answer to give and why. There are a lot of better answers he could have given. Consulting lawyers isn’t necessarily wrong for a president to do but that was an unnecessary detail for the question he was trying to answer. He does not do well in explaining important things.

I would have had more confidence in him if he had said joint chiefs or something else.

Bit of a stretch to give Dobson that much power in my humble opinion.

"Fred has NOT had chemotherapy."

~~~~~~~~~
chemotherapy /che·mo·ther·a·py/ (-ther´ah-pe) treatment of disease by chemical agents.
from http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/chemotherapy
~~~~~~~~~

Is Rituximab not a "chemical agent"? (Don't try to snow me -- I'm a physical chemist...)

Was it not administered for the "treatment of disease"?

~~~~~~~~~
Good grief! Buy you books, send you to school, and even make Google available, and still... y'all insist on making dumb@$$ statements... :-(
So it is your contention that anyone who has taken any medication has had chemotherapy?
That's stupid.
What is rituximab?
Rituximab belongs to a group of cancer drugs known as monoclonal antibodies. It is used to treat several types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Rituximab can be given:
* in combination with the chemotherapy regimen CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone), as the first treatment for people who have diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
* in combination with the chemotherapy regimen CVP (cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisolone), as the first treatment for people who have advanced (stage three or four) follicular lymphoma when first diagnosed
* to people with advanced (stage three and four) follicular lymphoma, whose lymphoma has come back after initial chemotherapy.
Rituximab may also be given as part of a research trial, either in combination with chemotherapy or on its own.
Fred has not had what is COMMONLY referred to as chemotherapy.
The Blogosphere (CQ) is commenting on Chrissy's attempts to do damage to Fred:
Fred Wins, Chris Loses (Update: My Prediction Comes True)
************************Intro EXCERPT********************
The first debate with Fred Thompson was expected to reveal whether the lanky actor had what it takes to make a national run for the office. Instead, it revealed Chris Matthews as a hack of the first order, one who tried his best to torpedo Thompson -- and failed utterly. He got so desparate that he demanded to know whether Thompson knew who the Canadian Prime Minister was -- and he did. Matthews grew so frustrated that he openly critiqued one of Thompson's answer for being too detailed, which prompted a scolding from Thompson.
That was the game behind the debate, and Thompson stomped Matthews into a laughingstock. In the rest of the debate, Thompson showed that he was comfortable and prepared, even for the silly attacks from other candidates.
