Republican Presidential Candidate Debate #8 – Dearborn, Michigan 10/09/07 - Official Discussion Thread
CNBC/MSNBC/The Wall Street Journal are jointly sponsoring the first Republican Presidential debate of the 2008 campaign focusing on economic issues. It will be held on October 9 in Dearborn, Michigan at the University of Michigan-Dearborn at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. Broadcast is live on CNBC at 4 PM ET (1 PM PT) and re-broadcast on MSNBC at 9 PM ET (6 PM PT). CNBC's Maria Bartiromo and MSNBC's Chris Matthews will host the debate.
Candidates participating:
Matthews tried to trip FRed up with Harper’s name (PM of Canada), and FRed was ready, and lit him up!

Romney answers 3 rounds of questions in one answer then playfully zings Thompson with a great joke.
That was funny and Fred’s response to it was good too.
Exactly my point.
Romney zings one on Thompson and Thompson fires right back and then sticks Sissy’s “gotcha question” back down his throat.

I noticed on Hardball that they keep saying why Rudy should and will win the Rep. nomination.
I didn’t see it all. It was hard to sit for 2 hours.
Nobody won and nobody lost. Although, no one was outstanding but Fred Thompson did a credible job in spite of anticipation otherwise.
I do wish we could be honest about manufacturing and jobs. First, most of the jobs lost are from productivity gains. Actually, China has fewer rather than more manufacturing jobs than they had two years ago. Second, manufacturing jobs in Minnesota are only 12% of non-farm workers; in Wisconsin, I believe, the figure is 19%. In any case, manufacturing is not addding jobs and neither are big corporations—most jobs are being created in the private economy by entrepreneurs. Third, and finally, as far as autos the Japanese now manufacture many, most (?) of their popular models here; there claim to fame is they produce better and cheaper autos that people want.
For every job protection might save, there are consumers who will have less to spend because they will have to pay more for the same product or service than they would if foreign trade were functioning.
One might also note that 44% of the profits of the S&P 500 result from our exports. By the way, no one of our esteemed candidates noted that the stock market hit another all time high today. At least no one mentioned it when I was listening.
Politicians usually pander to the working class assuming they are dumb enough to believe someone in Washington can either keep their job or create one for them. It always works but it is not true.
Yeah but more important Fred handled it well, the last five minutes have been all Fred.

Romney is coming across as very sharp. What is the point of this 30 second time limit when they all are exceeding it.
That little banter regarding Law and Order and acting between Fred and Mitt was pretty funny.
Fred looks rather old and his voice is not as strong as it once was. I am a little disappointed.
I thought this was live at 9 ET tonight. I didn’t know the event was this afternoon and that MSN is showing it on tape tonight. Had I known I would have tried to get home sooner.
