ABC Frets: Local Governments Going 'Too Far' Against Illegals?
NewsBusters.org ^ | Oct. 5, 2007 | Scott Whitlock

On Friday's "Good Morning America," reporter Claire Shipman fretted over the fact that local governments are aggressively fighting illegal immigration. An ABC graphic worried, "Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants: Have Communities Gone Too Far?" Discussing the efforts by a Texas town to stop the influx of illegals, Shipman claimed, "...Neighbors suddenly find they can't help themselves. The immigration debate exploding without the niceties." She also lamented the tone of the debate, saying that since the defeat of the Senate immigration bill, "...What had once been a lofty political debate has now become a gritty, explosive reality."

At no point did it occur to ABC to wonder if illegals had "gone too far" in breaking American laws. Rather, Shipman highlighted sympathetic stories of terrified immigrants. She asserted that in the small town of Irving, Texas, "Latino parents have grown so nervous, they're keeping their kids out of schools." The GMA reporter also talked to an anonymous illegal immigrant in Virginia who recounted the ordeal of having a child who "comes home and asked me, 'Why do they hate us?'"

It’s the PEOPLE giving voice to the lack of action by the elitist “I know what’s best for you” media apologists and politicians.

She asserted that in the small town of Irving, Texas, "Latino parents have grown so nervous, they're keeping their kids out of schools."

First, the "small town" of Irving, Texas [home of the Dallas Cowboys] has a population of over 200,000 and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area.

Irving contains the Las Colinas area, including the Mustangs at Las Colinas, which is the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. Several large businesses have headquarters in Irving, including Chuck E. Cheese's, ExxonMobil, Gruma, Kimberly-Clark, Michaels Stores, National Care Network, Omni Hotels, Southern Star Concrete, Inc., Xero Hour, Zale Corporation, Fluor Corporation and LXI Enterprise Storage. The city is also home to the national headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America. Part of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, which serves the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, is inside the city limits of Irving.

The racial makeup of the city was 64.2% White, 10.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 8.24% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 13.4% from other races, and 3.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 31.2% of the population. With one-third of the town Hispanic, it makes one wonder how nervous they really are.

Do we still have 12-20 illegal aliens squatting in America?

I wish.

How about it. That was an arbitrary, conservative figure from 2006!

That figure’s off by a factor of a million.

they would need to deport 10,000 illegals per day for five and a half years to remove what’s estimated to be here.

Actually, if only a modest 1,000 per day were consistently deported and their illegal employers prosecuted, about 8,500 a day would self-deport.

The process could even be accelerated by giving the early deportees cash incentives to be reduced to a free bus ride home to later self-deportees and six weeks in a desert labor camp for those who let that opportunity pass by.

Now, that gentleman's daughter is an American citizen. They were born here. He collects trash for a living. His Virginia employer doesn't ask any questions. But he says he's never been so frightened in his life.

Frightened of what? Being exiled to an island prison? He's frightened of being returned to the homeland country, as you say, the country that he wants to convert this nation into. Language, culture and all.

Thanks for saving me the post. The article was breathlessly inaccurate, even for the MSM.

“Do we still have 12-20 illegal aliens squatting in America?”

Who really knows for sure but according to this today:

“the group Californians for Population Stabilization, or CAPS, has unveiled a report estimating the illegal population is actually between 20 and 38 million.”

Too many for sure. And, if the Antichrist is elected Prez, they, and all of their relatives still in Mexico, will be official members of the United States welfare class and loyal Dummies.

There are at least 12 million illegal invaders in Cali alone.

Not only that you virtually NEVER hear of a Mexican badmouth Mexico...if it's so great what is there to be frightened about??? Ought to be happy to return to the country he and his compatriates love so much....and I'd be just as happy to make him happy that way!

Some years ago I worked with a guy who thought the government was complicit in the drug trade, in terms of making money on such transactions as confiscation of tons of cash when arrests are made. He thought it went further than that, but at the time I thought he was crazy.

Now? Recently in my town, the PD bought a number of new police cars outfitted with all the “gee whiz” tools that you get these days. Combined with the obvious power of the chambers of commerce across America demanding cheap labor, one has to wonder why after all this time the government has steadfastly refused to secure the border, even to the point of putting Border Patrol agents in prison for basically doing their job. What can we do about these damned crooked politicians when constituents keep sending the same crooks back to DC?

Three things I’d love to see but I know will never happen in my lifetime, if ever: First, term limits for congress critters; second, do away with lifetime appointments for federal judges (make ‘em all run for office, and - what the hell - term limits for them, too); third, a law that states unequivocally that any bill MUST pass Constitutional muster before it even goes to the floor of either house. Further, it should disallow any tampering once out of committee and be voted on as is with no add-on trickery as they like to do.

Career congress critters are destroying this country, and prime examples are Kennedy, Durbin, and Reid, the Three Stooges of the Senate.

OK, that’s my rambling rant for the day.

Good Morning America," reporter Claire Shipman fretted over the fact that local governments are aggressively fighting illegal immigration. An ABC graphic worried, "Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants: Have Communities Gone Too Far?"

Hey Claire !!...did ya do any *frettin'* over the 300 illegal criminals being deported a MONTH from ONE jail, in ONE town in TX.??? Irving is simply 'cleaning' up the neighborhood, yet you & many Latiino's whine...I guess y'all miss your criminals.

"Latino parents have grown so nervous, they're keeping their kids out of schools."

Hey Claire !! you *fretted* wrong again......Article in the Dallas News also stated that "Irving schools had PEAK enrollment as of Sept.25"......these JAILED deportations have been going since June 2006 (and going up every month).

So the facts you DON'T report are....'bootin' the criminals out of town has led to PEAK enrollment at Irving schools.

Also saves tax dollars in our jails, courts, interpretors (@ least 25 bucks a hour), & I'm sure the crime rate is down.

Next time your *frettin'* on national TV....get your *frettin' facts right.

Just to contemplate the magnitude of the problem,

How 'bout the magnitude of the criminals within the illegal population ??

ONE jail in ONE town is deporting 300 every month for 'other' (crimes) than simple illegal entry. (& I'm sure the violent illegal criminals are being held).

That's also 300 every month the taxpayers down have to support.

With one-third of the town Hispanic, it makes one wonder how nervous they really are.

Did you see that Irving schools reported 66% hispanic enrollment (36% of those in *limited English classes) ??

Yet ABC 'frets' they're to scared to go to school.

No kidding. They act like it's the Garden of Eden. And teach their kids how wonderful it is as well. And not one word of gratitude or respect for this country.
