ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --A county garbage operations employee found a plastic bag on the road stuffed with $65,000 Thursday -- and immediately turned it in to authorities.
It turned out the money had fallen off a Loomis armored car half an hour before Debbie Cole found it near the Pinellas County solid waste operations facility where she works. First she thought it was a turtle in the road.
The 53-year-old Largo woman found the bag just before 7 a.m., full of enough $50 and $100 bills to pay her salary for two years. She immediately contacted a supervisor, who called deputies.
It's not clear how the bag fell from the truck, said Mark Clark, spokesman for Loomis, a Houston-based cash-handling company.
Cole's boss, Bob Hauser, said he can't give her a raise or a bonus for her good deed because she's a government employee. But maybe, he said, he can arrange some extra time off.

If I found $65K in drug money, I promise you no one would be writing news articles about how I stupidly turned it in to the government.
Is it illegal for Loomis to give this woman a reasonable reward?

Vet, the dateline on this story was FLORIDA. Your average solid citizen isn’t throwing plastic bags full of hundreds around. Why, are you suggesting that this was Grandpa’s pension money? Be serious. You’ll notice that prior to this discovery there were no public screams from lovely suburban people crying that they had lost $65 thousand they’d saved up painfully through years of hard toil. Yes, I’m sure it was drug money.

Unless it was stone cold obvious where the money came from, I don’t think I would have turned it in. I just can’t see myself handing $65k over to the government.
I would have a very difficult time giving found money to the government. If I found that much I think I’d hang on to it myself and conduct my own search for the rightful owner by simply keeping my eyes pealed for stories about someone bag of money being missing.
I guess virtue is it's own reward but I'd have trouble turning down the $65K kicker.
