It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:
A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian
I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there
Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"
I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.
Oh, that is so dumb. And then tell me you’re one of those tut-tutting at the idiot MSM for comparing Christians to terrorists. Dobson’s like a bloodthirsty ayatollah? Get a reality check, dude.
I shouldn’t have to say this to a FReeper: Stop getting your stuff third-hand. Find me where Dobson has EVER spoken for God.
Good grief, I’d expect this crap at DU. Not here. Sad.
I wish Fred were a better Christian.
____________
So you have first hand knowledge of Fred’s Christian shortcomings? Please share what they are and how you come to know them.
I was wondering the same thing. What makes Fred less of a Christian.
Frankly I think this is ridiculous that people are sitting in judgement.
It really doesnt make the matter any better or promote any cause.
That’s a clarification, within which it is acknowledged that the quote is accurate. You’ve proven my point.
Amen brother!
Dayum, you’re good!
You've read a good sampling of opinions on this one thread alone
......and most of them are only parotting half-truths, untruths or innuendo....
....and they continue to repeat it, add to it, embellish & distort.
Never said he should shut up or go away.
I do feel that he A: doesn’t speak for all Christians and B: has ridiculous expectations for a candidate.
He also insulted Fred.
Dobson has his view and Thompson has his, though there seems some miscommunication therein.
He has high standards....he's a purist.
He will not now ...or ever... compromise...
Compromise is why we're in the mess we're in today.... the Republican Party.....and the nation.
Shall we call these the “Don’t tax m’beer ‘n’ condoms!” Republicans?
No one ever said Fred wasn’t a Christian... Just that they’d seen no evidence of it. Why does the Ron Paul conspiracy vibe seem to be invading the ranks of Thompson supporters? When someone purposefully distorts someone else’s plain-spoken comments in an attempt to trump up more support for their candidate, I become suspicious.
..but I will say some of them are very comfortable with compromise.
Compromise and pragmatism aren’t the same thing.
Compromise means giving up most of your standards to where nobody is happy. See Giuliani, Rudy.
Pragmatism is realizing that someone is 90% correct and will do much more good than simply throwing in the towel. See Thompson, Fred.
Should Dobson compromise? No. Does he need a dose of pragmatism? Yes.
I suppose you’re one of those “drinking is evil and condoms should be banned” Republicans, right?
(I can do that, too. Watch!)
So, touched a nerve, did I?
(Say, this mind-reading thing is fun! So much easier than actual, thinking dialogue!)
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other menrobbers, evildoers, adulterersor even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
We need to take a hard turn to the right....!!
We've ceded too much ground....don't know if it can be recovered.
The hard right folk...(include me) want a candidate with deep, real convictions and moral clarity.
I know MSM & the 'powers that be' have written off Duncan Hunter...
..but he has the 'right stuff' !!
Only God's intervention can bring Hunter to the top of the tier...
..and I'm not factoring out God!
I am concerned about the “triangulation” that the DU’s are doing to the Christian Right. The Christian Right was THE difference in the 2004 election.
The MSM and the leftists are trying to peal off the
“Social Justice” Christians.
I hate to be negative, BUT.....We lack the vision thing.
(and I am not talking about the “Thousand points of light” kind of vision thing.) We are missing the “shinning City on the Hill” vision as articulated by the Great One(RR).
People said the same about Reagan.
