It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:
A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian
I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there
Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"
I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.
And I became a Catholic because while my wife was raised as a Catholic, she left the Church years ago. After being diagnosed with brest cancer, I saw that she was floundering, sometimes in despair and sadness. Talking with her, I told her that I would become a Catholic if it meant getting her back to God. She went to confession and I became a Catholic.
The 'born agains' are those people who have come back to God and Christ and their manner is so holier-than-thou because they act and behave in a manner that your belief will never be as strong as theirs. I see this even in the Catholic faith. If you read some of the replies to me in this thread, I am automatically assumed to be non-Christian because I dare to challenge or disagree with them. Concernign this thread, I have had some privately freepmail me and agree with me. They do this because they probably do not want the headache of being attacked by the born-agains.
The quote, in it's full context, is very clear: you are wrong.
out of context...btw....I do not believe everything I read, I am selective.
Are you saying you have to attend a church to be a christian? I gave up organized churches long ago, they became too political for me. But I do read the Bible and follow the teachings of Christ. I don’t have to go to church to be a christian. Now you’re being judgemental. Tell me where in the Bible it says in order to be a christian you HAVE to go to church? Remember, religion is man-made. I prefer putting my trust in God, not a church.
i consider myself a neutral party in this, as i had neither love for, nor dislike for, Dr. Dobson. Looking at it objectively i think Dr. Dobson mishandled it and made insufficient efforts to try to clear up the misunderstanding. it is also interesting that those who are defending Dr. Dobson, herein, are largely opposed to Fred’s candidacy anyway. i find no fault with Fred’s reaction in this interview.
He's supposedly becoming a cardinal.
Politicians less firm-spined than Thompson hope so... then, they'll only have to kiss his ring.
Everyone riding the red truck, should do as they wish.
The overall objective, as I see it, is to elect
Conservatives at the Local, State, and Federal levels.
A Win One For The Gipper, type situation.
I do not know for certain but I have to believe this is
nothing more than an attempt to stop....I said STOP
the real objective and that objective is to elect
Conservatives. I care not for a fight. I have done my
best to avoid a fight. But when it comes to the media
agenda, I will say what I think, just as I hope you will.
i also can agree to disagree. but i don’t like to see anti-Dobson animus, or insufficient Christianity, listed as reasons for feeling that Dr. Dobson mishandled this. it is simply not true.
The reason why I wrote, “...if you’re interesed” - is proved in your reply.
You aren’t. LOL
Piffle. I, for one, want a President with a spine, not a strand of boiled linguini. Standing up to one blowhard who thinks he speaks for God (Dobson) is good practice for standing up to another blowhard who thinks he speaks for God (Imanutjob or whatever that Iranian guy’s name is).
It's been said MANY times on this thread but apparently you still don't get it.
DOBSON NEVER SAID THOMPSON WAS NOT A CHRISTIAN!
That being said, I am not a Dobson groupie...I mean I'm grateful for him or Robertson or Falwell or any of the christians who have helped in the cause for the last 30 years. But I do belive Dobson's threat to go 3rd party is silly.
Well, Falwell is dead, so I can see why you’re not following his lead. I’m also not going to parrott Dobson’s line, but there is no question that if they field a “Christian” candidate, it will make it easier for Hillary to win. She may do so anyway, though.
..like BibCh, I too find it very strange to disconnect (so early in the game) from millions of folks who care/love/support Dr.Dobson.
It really doesn't make sense.....
If I'm reading it correctly, it sounds like he could care less what Dobson thinks and believe it or not, that translates to millions of Dobson listeners the same thing.
Maybe lots of Freepers as well as many in the US wish Dobson would shut-up or go away....
..it's not going to happen and he does have loyal listeners across the nation.
He doesn't tell them what to do, but we revere, respect and support him across the board.
He's not infallible, but he's honest & corrects his mistakes when they are made.
There will continue to be anti-Dobson, anti-Christian animus until this election is settled!....sadly
The quote came out in March. Has Dobson disavowed it? Has he said something to the effect of “I never said that, the quote is false, I’m being misquoted, etc.?”
I was up early for a doctor's visit....(have been making several of those)
..I'm tired.
Later friend.
i truly cannot see how Christians, of which I AM ONE, could possibly take it as a "diss" that Thompson doesn't particularly feel the need to justify his faith to someone else. i believe that Fred THompson is a Christian and that he is not looking to alienate OTHER Christians in the slightest by refusing to pander to Dr. Dobson, which is exactly how it would be construed if he then were to ask to speak to Dr. Dobson to CONVINCE him of his faith. Since Dr. Dobson was the one to question the veracity of Fred's faith, it seems much more incumbent on Dr. Dobson to apologize to Fred for that, than for Fred to apologize for not feeling the need to justify his faith.
go rest, we have a long way to go : )
It was not a ‘hard hitting’ interview. Hannity was introducing Mr. & Mrs. Thompson to Mr. & Mrs. America. :-)
Fred has had many hard hitting interviews, you can find a lot of them online at his website fred08.com and at youtube.com.
