Fred Thompson on Harry Reid’s attacks on Rush Limbaugh

Posted on October 3rd, 2007
By Fred in Announcements

Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh. He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops, yet Democrats claim he is not being strong enough. I wonder who General Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive?

That is sad. I don’t listen to Hewitt but I never considered Romney a choice from the start. He’s proving my gut instincts right.

The Romney spokesman made a less than fully informed statement caught off guard by the question.

Spokesman's fault...got it. Under the bus with him!

Yes, I understand completely.

The Mitt Romney campaign is not revolving around anyone but himself. Thank you for confirming that.

The rest of us on the conservative aisle, while we has out trying to convince people to give him money, have been fighting the Democrats attempt to silence free speech. I find it amazing the supposed conservative alternative to Rudy was unaware of the entire conservative leaning medium fighting this battle for the last week.

When Hewitt realized how badly Romney had screwed his attempts to portray himself as a conservative, HUGH HEWITT dragged Romney onto his show to do damage control. Spin after stepping it is not believeable. It’s contrived to save his political hide.

BTW, if you are ill informed on an MSM story that claims Rush of all people is smearing the military, the best thing to do is not throw Rush Limbaugh overboard. A real conservative gives him the benefit of the doubt given his twenty year conservative pro military track record. a track record Romney does not have.

You can attack me, but you can not take back what Romney did. Nor can Hewitt. And I sincerely doubt Rush is going to forget this either.

Take back what he did? He did exactly the right thing when he became fully aware of the situation. When Romney, not his spokesman, spoke about the Rush issue he said the right things. It may be surprising to you that he is not glued to the radio or typing posts on FR and wasn’t aware of the controversy, but ask him about oil drilling off the coast of Florida, his tax plan, tort reform, immigration law enforcement, the border fence, health care reform, the WOT and other such matters that actually concern average Americans and how his plans differ from his opponents’ plans and he will be well-informed and ready to discuss them at a drop of a hat.

What he cant take back is that he made his statement to Huffington Post...
that in itself speaks volumes.

Ok, so Mitt’s office contacted Rush THE SAME DAY to apologize and offer to make a statement if he wishes. Rush didn’t want a public apology from Mitt and yet the next day he still bashes Mitt. What the hell does Rush have to complain about?

So now we have it.

Romney to the Huffington Post and her liberal audience: “Governor Romney would disagree with the negative characterization of those men and women who serve with honor and distinction in the United States Military. There may be disagreements with individual opinions, but no one would ever dispute the fact that those members of the military who disagree with the war have earned the right to express that opinion.”

Romney to Hugh Hewitt and his conservative audience: Rush has “got a long record of supporting our soldiers. There’s no question that this is a man who has been very much on the side of our fighting men and women.”

Hewitt’s headline: “Romney and Thompson Defend Rush”

From the mouth of Rush Limbaugh himself.

RUSH Transcript:today’s show
“I didn’t talk about this last week, but Mitt Romney issued a statement much like he issued against — who did he throw under the bus? Oh. Larry Craig. He issued a statement: That’s reprehensible what Limbaugh said, horrible, whatever it was he said — and then later in the day somebody from his office called our office. “We just found out that this is a smear, and Mitt will say this if he’s asked about it.” He hasn’t been asked about it, so his statement still stands.”

But who did Romney avoid?

Hugh Hewitt has nothing to do with Romney’s attack on “America’s Conservative”, Hugh Hewitt has nothing to do with “Rush’s Republicans”

Mitt Romney still has not personally approached the man he attacked, and if you read Rush’s words, they say it all.

“”””He (Romney) issued a statement: That’s reprehensible what Limbaugh said, horrible, whatever it was he said — and then later in the day somebody from his office called our office. “We just found out that this is a smear, and Mitt will say this if he’s asked about it.” He hasn’t been asked about it, so his statement still stands.”””””

Mitt must have called Geraldo to find out what’s up. Don’t any of these guys have staff that do their research before they open their pie holes? It seems Fred looks into the situation himself, makes a decision and acts on it. Very refreshing in this day and age if you ask me.

“Take back what he did? He did exactly the right thing when he became fully aware of the situation.”

No, he did not go on the Rush Limbaugh show.

Mitt Romney did not call Rush Limbaugh.

Rush Limbaugh is clearly disgusted with Mitt Romney, and justifiably so.

Is Rush just supposed to hear that “ Oh ya Rush, It is over, Romney went on another radio show and simply ignored his attack on you therefore reinforcing it.

Rush transcript:

“I didn’t talk about this last week, but Mitt Romney issued a statement much like he issued against — who did he throw under the bus? Oh. Larry Craig. He issued a statement: That’s reprehensible what Limbaugh said, horrible, whatever it was he said — and then later in the day somebody from his office called our office. “We just found out that this is a smear, and Mitt will say this if he’s asked about it.” He hasn’t been asked about it, so his statement still stands.”

According to what we know, Romney’s campaign did not offer to make a public apology — the campaign said he would say x about Rush “if he was asked about it.” As Mark Twain said, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” If Romney were sincere about correcting a serious mis-statement that he made, he would have promptly issued another statement — not called Rush and offer to correct it “if asked.”

And I personally hold Romney accountable for the statements his own campaign issues to the Huffington Post (as I hold all candidates responsible for statements their campaigns issue). The only other option is to believe that Romney has a very serious campaign management problem to allow his spokesperson to send out unvetted statements on breaking issues.

Read the Hewitt transcript, Romney never apologizes to Rush.

Romney never even acknowledges the Romney statements on the attack in question, this is huge.

Of course nothing of substance could have been done anywhere but to Rush directly, but Romney didn’t even stoop to make the gesture.

Romney is clearly saying something here.
