Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee dies

Harry Lee, Jefferson Parish's irrepressible sheriff since 1980, died Monday at Ochsner Medical Center, losing a five-month battle to leukemia. He was 75.

Mr. Lee was re-elected regularly by huge margins even as he managed to become embroiled in controversy. Defying every notion of political good sense, he unabashedly -- and often indelicately -- took stands considered taboo by most politicians. His shoot-from-the-hip style often made his closest advisers cringe even as it endeared him to voters.

"I think people like me because I do a good job and because I tell it like it is," he once said. "If you ask me something, I'll give you an answer, straight up. People may not like it, but I'm not going to sugarcoat it."

Thanks for the ping, CC. This news saddens me. Every parish and county in this nation needs a sheriff like Harry Lee, unafraid to tell it like it is ... Memphis comes to mind as they celebrate being the violent crime capital of the country.

My son’s in the third grade and we live in St. Tammany. He came home from school and already knew that Harry Lee died. The word had already got out in the GRADE SCHOOLS! I guess that’s a sign that he goes to a good school!
