The US administration has shifted strategy and is drawing up plans for possible air strikes against Iran's Revolutionary Guard instead of the country's nuclear sites, the New Yorker magazine reported on Sunday.
President George W. Bush has requested the Joint Chiefs of Staff revise plans for a possible attack on Iran, with the focus on "surgical" raids against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps which Washington accuses of targeting US forces in Iraq, the magazine wrote.

It’s about time!
Again? ;0)
One cruise missle on their one fuel refinery would take the entire country down in a matter of months. This MSM stuff is just fear-mongering.

In order to get to the kingpins rather than the paymasters we’d better bomb Moscow and Beijing.
I don’t believe this for a nano-second.
They’ve probably had plans in the works for months. They don’t wait till the last minute to do this kind of stuff.
said the article by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh.

The above makes this pretty hard to believe.

The Democrats will be desparate to stop it, even with the RG designated as a Terrorist Organization waging war against us because it will lead to victory, which they do not want. The trick will be to bomb without alienating a population that is in the majority in our favor.
Won’t happen... Though I’m sure the administration will pretend that it might in order to extract as much as possible.
And yet, it won’t work, either.
This problem belongs to the next President. And Bush has cultivated the fiction that it’s not his mistake. About as good a result as could have been expected from a wimp.
The US military has been involved in contingency planning against Iran since at least the presidency of Jimmy Carter, who undertook a failed commando operation to rescue US hostages in Tehran in 1980.

Agreed.
I’m pretty sure the US has contingency plans for every country.
1) strikes on the Revolutionary Guards could be justified as "in response to their meddling in Iraq", and therefore (Bush's admin might hope...) would be less controversial than hitting the nuke sites "unprovoked". (Yeah sure.)
2) but the strikes on their Guard would force an open Iran response, which would then
3) open the door for the U.S. blow to the nuclear program after all, which is what they really care about here.
If so (I realize I've made a lot of assumptions :), this sounds too cute by half to me. If the problem is the nuke program, hit the nuke sites, accept the political fallout, and be done with it.
For crying out loud, he's a second-term lame duck President, what the hell is he worried about anyway?
Look who wrote the New Yorker article.
‘nuff said.
If we do anything, and I don't see how we can avoid it in the next 4 or 5 months, we will not use half measures! Both the nuclear sites and the Iranian military will be, at a minimum, knocked to their knees.
Cut off at the knees may be more like it!
What a pant-load!

I could get more credible news from a Weekly Reader.
