Christian leaders threaten to abandon Republicans

WASHINGTON – Some of the top leaders in Christian pro-family activism – including James Dobson of Focus on the Family – met in Salt Lake City yesterday to plot a strategy if Rudy Giuliani or another supporter of legalized abortion is nominated by the Republican Party as its presidential candidate.

Not only was there a consensus among activists to withhold support for the Republican nominee, there was even discussion about supporting the entry of a new candidate to challenge the frontrunners.

It's no secret that Dobson, founder of one of the largest Christian ministries in the country, has no use for Giuliani.

In June, he said: "I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008. It is an irrevocable decision. If given a Hobson's – Dobson's? – choice between him and Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran – or if worse comes to worst – not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life. My conscience and my moral convictions will allow me to do nothing else."

Dobson reportedly drove from his headquarters Colorado Springs to the private meeting, held between sessions of the Council for National Policy in Salt Lake City this weekend, just to weigh in with other leaders of family groups, including the Family Research Council, Bott Broadcasting, Capitol Resource Institute, Salem Communications, Eagle Forum and Concerned Women for America

I’m not sure you realize how alienated the libertarians and Blue Dogs are from the socons.

I understand precisely how fractured we are. It is natural, as we are opposing forces unless bound by the only thing we have in common- That being true Conservatism.

Libertarianism cannot work without social conservatism- It will lead to anarchy as I am sure you understand. Likewise, I recognize that social conservatism cannot survive without libertarian values, lest we stray into theocracy, or simply socialism with a different face.

We must work together or we fail. Always separate, unnatural partners... A symbiosis of necessity.

What is lacking is leadership and a leader able to satisfy the needs of all factions. The fact that we are at each other's throats speaks volumes of how far off the rails this party has gone.

I'm not a Rudy supporter, but you cannot wash your hands and turn your back, by refusing to vote, and expect to stand on moral convictions and have a clean conscience when you know what the Clinton's and the Democrat platform represent, and knowing that, you didn't do all in your power to prevent them from regaining the WH.

You can hold out hope to have some influence, or at least apply some pressure on a Republican. There will be SC appointments, etc. Hillary Clinton wouldn't spit on you if your guts were on fire, unless it benefitted her, and you can expect another Ruth B.G., or worse, if possible, as SC justice.

So, you make think you've got a clean conscience. I think you are totally illogical. Sadly, your ignorance will draw a following...just certain that they are doing the will of God, as Hillary and Bill Clinton smile all the way to the WH.

May God bless us.

You're very comfortable with 'compromise', aren't you.

I'm not comfortable with 'surrender' to the likes of Hillary and Bill Clinton, whether through ignorance, or by design.

Just remember, in the real world, when you vote for the lesser of two evil, YOU GET LESS EVIL.

A moral person should never knowingly vote for any kind of evil.

Yes, in Heaven, or any other pefect place, you'd never have to. But down here in the real world, you sometimes do.

To show how ridiculous that high sounding statement is, answer this: Would you ever vote for any candidate that had ANY position whatsoever that you felt was wrong? if you answer yes, you are doing what you claimed you would not do above, and if you answer no, you'll never, ever vote in your lifetime.

In 1992, I thought the lesser of two evils (Bush or Perot) was Perot so I voted for him. What we got was Clinton. I'm never going to be that stupid again.

You still can't go about things the wrong way and expect it to turn out right.

People keep making this political process seem more complicated than it is. We just need to have faith in God and then do the right thing.

Sounds to me like Boehner is taking the social conservatives for granted in much the same way as the Dems take the black voters for granted.

If he thinks social conservs will "go along" with Rudy based on security alone, he's sadly mistaken.

Dobson will never compromise his core values as so many other Republicans are willing to do.

Have never voted for anyone that had a position that was immoral but I have voted for someone who it turned out did not deserve my trust. Will try very hard not to make that mistake ever again.

I agree.

There is no way that I will vote for Giuliani. None. Under no circumstance.

If the Republicans are going to be so obstinate as to kick their religious conservatives to the side of the road, then they are dooming us to 4 years of Hillary.

Why would they insist on abortion supporter Giuliani knowing it will give us Hillary?

Those who insist on supporting Giuliani are guaranteeing that Hillary will be the next president.

Giuliani hasn’t been nominated, and I doubt he will be, but Dobson is doing as much to harm the cause as Giuliani could ever do.

Dobson needs to choose a candidate and support him, instead helping the Democrats by rallying his followers to sit at home and surrendering the WH, if a candidate is lifted up that he will not support.

That is not supporting his cause, or standing up for moral principles, it is washing his hands and turning his back and saying it is someone else’s fault.
