Many schools get a substantial amount of federal funding due to the number of students they have on free or reduced lunch.

(My mother is a retired school teacher, so I know this stuff.)

Yes, but that money is divided up among the schools according to how many students each one has.

In Florida part of the money comes from the State. Even if that is nonly a small part, the schools regard it as their Lifeblood. The feds control local schools pretty tightly with the School Lunch Program which is not that much money and actually costs a district probably more than they receive to implement it. Locals will always spend $100 in order to get $67.50 in “free” money from the government. City governments are the same.
