A local talk show host in Connecticut gave it an execllent review. People in Connecticut are especially interested because one of the four communities featured is Waterbury, CT.

Interesting they discussed how all Americans were behind their president during WW2.

My dad started his war in Tunisia.

I thought part one was pretty good, in particular the fairly detailed treatment of Guadalcanal and the role of the Marine Raiders, and just what a tough slog it was.

I, like others, are watching with a bit of a critic’s eye.

Part One was pretty good, IMHO.
But Burns/PBS did have to include some agenda-driven segments.

Well, for that “Greatest Generation”, I guess they paid the price to
even let some folks have some politically-correct TomFoolery!

On the other hand, there were some very honest, forth-right AND GRAPHIC
images and verbal description of the Allies were “up against it” in
those early days after Pearl Harbor.

Partly because we didn't have a 24 hour news cycle back then...and that was back in the good ol days, when the office and officeholder were paid respect.

Those 88 were one nasty piece of artillary, especially if it was aimed at you.

My dad started his war in Tunisia.

Thank you for your Dad serving our country. My Dad started his as an 18 year old landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

The media did seem to have it out for Patton back then but for the most part you are correct.

It sure was a wonderful image of WWII-era Waterbury in the film.

Hard-working immigrants (forgive me for saying it...legal immigrants),
doing the sort of precision work/machining that is seen as a loser’s profession
in today’s USA.

I got my mom (nine years old in north-central OK on Dec. 7, 1941) to
watch Part 1.
I said to her (about the small town America vignettes): “It was a
simpler times.”
She said “You’re darned right it was!”

The most psychedelic part of Part One was showing Hollywood stars and starlets
turning out essentially en masse for bond-sales and morale building.

Talk about a "that was then, this is now" situation with Hollywood!

76,000 men were lost in that first battle six month battle in Tunisia.

Staggering.

I've often wondered about that type of statement because what can be more complex and confusing than a world war?

Although German, it was the favorite song of both sides during the battles in N. Africa.
