DETROIT -- United Auto Workers union members walked out of General Motors Corp. factories in the U.S. Monday morning after bargaining over a new national labor agreement failed to produce a deal by an 11 a.m. deadline. It's the first time in more than 20 years that the UAW has staged a mass walkout in connection with company wide contract talks. But in a sign of the complex forces at work in the Detroit auto industry, GM shares were trading higher Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, as investors cheered signs that GM management might be willing to resist ...

I bet there are thousands of citizens who dream of the wages and benefits GM is offering. No wonder production of cars in the U.S. has migrated to right-to-work states.

This will really help the city of Detroit. Do union workers collect unemployment while they are on strike?

No, there is a Strike Fund. But it doesn’t last long. I remember when UPS went on strike. We immediately signed with FEDEX and when UPS finally steeled it was determined that it would take ten years for each employee to earn back the money they lost.

An earlier article from today (anticipating a strike) mentioned they get health and 200 bucks a week.

No, they get $200 a week from the UAW strike fund.

That fund is about $800 million right now, so the UAW has enough to pay every GM worker $200 a week for almost two years.

NO, they do not collect unemployment while they strike. They get union $$$ which isn't much really. It won't be just Detroit that's effected, there are already plants on strike in Ohio. If this goes on long...watch for the ripples.

Unions should be outlawed because in most cases they are controlled by socialist opportunist thugs. These labor unions hurt the business, the economy, and the consumers as well as reward unporductivity and laziness.

I don’t know how it is in other states, but in NY and NJ you have to be out (on strike) for 10 weeks before you can collect unemployment. So you can, it just takes a while. Chances are if this is a protracted strike, they will go back right before their union members are eligible for unemployment. Typical.

The UAW's strike fund is almost one billion dollars.

Just another reason why we own a Lexus and a Honda Ridgeline, shop at Walmart and try to avoid buying products made by Union Rat Thugs.

Thanks for the info. Bet they will enjoy their $200 a week vacation. When I was young the UAW always went on strike during deer season. The strike was always settled by the time deer season ended. Don’t know if that is still true.
