Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS

[snip]

One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.

Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.

"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.

Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.

Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.

Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee

[snip]

A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.

Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

Yep. Wind chill about 39, even though the sun is shining. The leaves are falling off the trees in record numbers.

I don’t think the Bastard was closely related to the Saxon kings.

Edward and Alfred's mother was Emma of Normandy who was the sister of Richard (II) the Good of Normandy, Richard was also the father of Robert the Magnificent who was the father of William.

So they were second cousins. Or first cousins once removed. I can never keep those straight.

It was about 60 here. We have had such nice weather this year. Which has made it possible to get more out of the garden. We planted about three weeks late this year so we were kind of worried.

Is it YOUR weather closet? *sheesh*

No wonder it’s cold! It’s Canadian! That means someone has moved my desert closet! LOL!

I’d have to get out my genealogy to keep up with you on that stuff. (It’s about my brain...)

I have a really hugh genealogy chart that has all of the Royalty on it. It’s quite interesting. I just have no wall to hang it on.

We usually get two crops a year, here. Of course, that depends on what is planted, and what part of the valley it’s in.

(Did you plant any tomatoes?)

Eight different types of tomatoes, including a small orange one that is so sweet and tasty that most of them don't make it into the house. We have canned two shelves of tomato products and given them away by the bushel.

Next year I am thinking of drying some as well.

A friend gave us 2 boxes full from his garden, and we dried most of them because we couldn’t eat them fast enough.

They were wonderful fresh.

Nothing is as good as a tomato sandwich! Unless it’s a tomato still warm from the sun. Or still warm from the sun, made into a sandwich! ;o]
