Note the green LEDs arranged in the shape of a star, as in Star Simpson.

And presumably Maria knew this was the Star Simpson of dingbat fame. OF course if the Star had some common courtesy she would have replied to Maria that this was simply a project she'd done at school lighting some led's in a pattern of a Star because she was a Star. Nope, can't do that.

Scared the bejesus out of Maria Moncayo. It was her report that set the airport SWAT team in motion.

BTW, was the putty in her hand in the shape of a star as well or did two days of sleeping with it in her hand ruin the star?

First lack of common courtesy is not a crime. Second, we don't know the content of the conversation. The other explanation is that Star, being actually innocent and thinking there to be nothing wrong with her gadget, herself thought the question from the information desk manager to be rude and impertinent. You go to an information desk to ask information, not to be interrogated.

Reports vary on whether she replied. According to a WBZ-TV report, she did in fact respond:

A Massachusetts Port Authority staffer manning an information booth in the terminal became suspicious when Simpson -- wearing the device -- approached to ask about an incoming flight, [State Police Maj. Scott] Pare said. She did not respond when the employee asked her about the device she was wearing, so the employee repeated the question, police said.

Simpson then said the device was artwork and left the counter and walked around the terminal area, causing some employees to leave the building in fear, police said.

Simpson then walked outside, and the information booth attendant notified a nearby trooper.
