LAKELAND, Fla., Sept. 15 At his second campaign stop of the day on Friday, just after 2 p.m., Fred D. Thompson was deep into a riff on the benefits of high-quality American health care.
Its allowing us to live healthier lives and to live longer, Mr. Thompson said at a Jaycee park here. Thats good news. But we have more retired folks. I hope to become one of them one of these days.
Nervous laughter from the audience.
Not too soon, he added hastily.
So much for dispelling the idea that he is too lazy to run for president...
His critics, already pointing to what they call Mr. Thompsons skimpy Senate record, might find even more ammunition in his campaign schedule... Mr. Thompson has made a languid three-day swing through Florida ending Saturday. The pace has kept him on a jumbo air-conditioned bus far more often than he is actually campaigning.
Since Thursday morning, when the tour began, Mr. Thompson has made no more than three campaign stops a day, with long stretches in between. In recent spins through Iowa, he kept a similarly relaxed schedule. Mitt Romney, by comparison, often does six town-hall-style forums a day when in Iowa...
But once off the bus, Mr. Thompson has shown occasional signs of discomfort. In a speech here on Friday, he sweated profusely under the afternoon sun, breathed heavily and, while struggling over a question, asked no one in particular if his microphone was on. (It was.)
Some audience members winced as Mr. Thompson sweated through the question-and-answer session.
Im surprised they didnt pull him out of there, said John Chambers of nearby Punta Gorda, after the speech ended. Suzanne Miranda, who watched the event from a lawn chair, said, I felt bad for him...

Other than the opportunity for FR members to make comments about the usual bias and stupidity of the writer and the source, posting NYT attack articles about ANY Republican candidate is of little value.
>>>We need to see that he can take care of business, not himself.<<<
Funny, I think he’s the only one in this race who has proven more than capable of doing just that, and in numerous settings.
Come on, even Teddy Roosevelt wouldn’t be caught dead out of a three-piece suit when running for the Presidency. But yes, these are different times...
You hit on a bit of a sour note for me. There are certain places where I’ve lived where you couldn’t find a church populated by younger people where you found the guys in shirts and ties and the girls in dresses. A bit unfortunate, I think. Maybe I’m just a throwback.
“””Other than the opportunity for FR members to make comments about the usual bias and stupidity of the writer and the source, posting NYT attack articles about ANY Republican candidate is of little value.”””
Sad but true, sometimes it pays to take a break and watch the actual candidate on film.

That looks like the NewYork Stock Exchange ... not Grand Central Station.
“Actually, I predict it will be McCain to drop first and then the 2nd tiers like Hunter. Maybe McCain has enough money to stay in past them though.”
McCain’s made something of a comeback, and is actually polling better than Romney nationally for the first time in months. Ah, the man’s ego. He won’t drop out until it’s over. And, being the “maverick” that he is, an independent run or a spin as Hillary’s VP wouldn’t surprise me at all.
I've said before that if a Freeper has an endorsement for a particular candidate as their tagline, their objectivity is to be questioned when casting stones at other candidates. If a Freeper actually JOINED with a candidate as part of (or in entirety such as yours) their screenname and said Freeper cast aspertions about another candidate then said Freeper's objectivity should be presumed to not exist.
Any "I'm just saying..." or "...it seems to me.." or "...from what I can tell..." statements to advance an idea of objectivity are to be seen as disingenious.
We already know that. In fact, Romney is the only candidate of which we can be certain it is true. Mitt Romney's "taken care of business" his whole life from graduating at the top of his class at Harvard, to turning around a failing company into one of the most successful venture capital firms in the country, to saving the Olympics, to running a state and to living a most blessed family and married life.
And, white gloves can be quite exquisite....
“OK. Ill tell you exactly why, and try to be even-handed as possible.”
I’ll give you kudos for a polite and persuasive post... Actual reasons for support are far more persuasive than some of the knee-jerk emotionalism I’ve been seeing on this thread. I hope Fred Thompson supporters don’t go the way of Ron Paul supporters and bash anyone who has questions about their candidate, which I’ve unfortunately seen a lot of here tonight.
I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. We need to be united behind a nominee, not factionalized amongst ourselves against him.
Bush used to work like a dog when he campaigned. I marveled at his stamina.
I can’t remember any NYT article talking about how energetic or athletic he was, though.
OMG!! I think I may have non-Hodgkins lymphoma!! I noticed during the summer when it was over 90 degrees with 80% humidity...I WAS SWEATING!!! I've also been rather fatigued lately. I just assumed it was because I work 10-14 hours a day, but you've opened my eyes! And maybe the weight loss isn't due to the diet I went on recently.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I would have gone on believing there were rational reasons for my sweating in the heat, being tired due to lack of sleep and losing weight as a result of dieting. Because of your ability to diagnose serious illness over the internet I'm going to make out my will, call my loved ones and pack it in. My life is over and I have you to thank for making me aware of it.
Your kidding me, right? Fred is in remission from Lymphoma. Being in remission means you have regular blood work and follow up visits with your Oncologist in three to six month intervals. If the patient has any suspected symptoms, he IMMEDIATELY meets with his Oncologist just to be sure the disease has not returned. This is not a game...
As a Leukemia survivor currently in remission, I find your armchair diagnosis outrageous. Don’t let your Romney support bias cloud your thinking. You sound like an idiot Democrat making statements like that.
You seem to be under the spell of media telegenic political hunks.
I was referring to normal in our society, not typical handsome politicians.
Remember, we were discussing health, not pinup quality.
I have noticed these clowns that come to FR to
run Fred
down are just seeking attention.
Otherwise nobody talks to them, so this is the ticket.. Quite a sick game.
“Exquisite” is not the adjective for the President of the United States of America. That is not the one point that any candidate should wish to leave us with.
Romney’s Massachusetts State healthcare might work in that State. They already tax, regulate and restrict everywhere they can, and the people are evidently used to it. The plan sure wouldn’t work without a State income tax. And we sure don’t want one - or anything that depends on one - in Texas.
Fred Thompson leaves me thinking he will do what he says he will do, not wondering how many hairdressers he’s got in that bus. He is a conservative who has been pro-life since I can remember and has never given two messages on that subject.
I believe that Fred can lead the Nation, without histrionics or prematurely responding as the early-adopter campaiqners in this Presidential race did.
>>>And Freds light-years ahead of Mitt on all the above issues<<<
No.
>>>McCain, or Rudy on all the above issues<<<
Yes.
Miami Florida is absolutely the hottest place in the USA. You are not human if you do not sweat in Miami...
Where would Mitt find the time...might be too busy endorsing Dems..
>>>>Exquisite is not the adjective for the President of the United States of America.<<<
Agreed. That’s partially why I referred to George Washington and held exquisite for a pair of woman’s gloves. We expect a President to be utmost a professional. As someone disciplined, traditional, yet capable and talented. I think Romney fits that bill pretty darn well.
>>>Romneys Massachusetts State healthcare might work in that State. They already tax, regulate and restrict everywhere they can, and the people are evidently used to it. The plan sure wouldnt work without a State income tax. And we sure dont want one - or anything that depends on one - in Texas.<<<
Well, for starters, that’s why Romney has argued to let each individual state work out its own scheme and has fought for market deregulation. He did work it out as a compromise in Massachusetts, in part to avoid socialized medicine. Time will tell if it succeeds.
>>>He is a conservative who has been pro-life since I can remember and has never given two messages on that subject.<<
Oh?

Fred Thompson has changed his views on abortion and indeed ran as Pro-Choice in 1994. And he doesn’t believe a woman who kills an unborn child within her should be punishable under the law. Only her doctor. In essence, it is illegal to assist with an abortion but not illegal to kill an unborn child.
Romney believes that the unborn should be protected under the 14th Amendment.
If Fred is willing to come around to that viewpoint, good for him. As it stands, Romney is better on the issue.
The word that comes to mind when I think of Mitt Romney is another “e” word -— excellence. When I think of the President of the United States of America.... I don’t think of settling for second best.
