Sparse Schedule for Thompson on Trail
The New York Times ^ | September 16, 2007 | Julie Bosman

Posted on 09/16/2007 2:41:31 PM PDT by Plutarch

LAKELAND, Fla., Sept. 15 — At his second campaign stop of the day on Friday, just after 2 p.m., Fred D. Thompson was deep into a riff on the benefits of high-quality American health care.

“It’s allowing us to live healthier lives and to live longer,” Mr. Thompson said at a Jaycee park here. “That’s good news. But we have more retired folks. I hope to become one of them one of these days.”

Nervous laughter from the audience.

“Not too soon,” he added hastily.

So much for dispelling the idea that he is too lazy to run for president...

His critics, already pointing to what they call Mr. Thompson’s skimpy Senate record, might find even more ammunition in his campaign schedule... Mr. Thompson has made a languid three-day swing through Florida ending Saturday. The pace has kept him on a jumbo air-conditioned bus far more often than he is actually campaigning.

Since Thursday morning, when the tour began, Mr. Thompson has made no more than three campaign stops a day, with long stretches in between. In recent spins through Iowa, he kept a similarly relaxed schedule. Mitt Romney, by comparison, often does six town-hall-style forums a day when in Iowa...

But once off the bus, Mr. Thompson has shown occasional signs of discomfort. In a speech here on Friday, he sweated profusely under the afternoon sun, breathed heavily and, while struggling over a question, asked no one in particular if his microphone was on. (It was.)

Some audience members winced as Mr. Thompson sweated through the question-and-answer session.

“I’m surprised they didn’t pull him out of there,” said John Chambers of nearby Punta Gorda, after the speech ended. Suzanne Miranda, who watched the event from a lawn chair, said, “I felt bad for him...”

1/2 hour to bedtime. I’ll pass on the Coke but popcorn sounds good!

Women used to wear hats and white gloves, too.

However, there’s a difference between perfectionism and neat, between obsession and nicely put together.

I don’t like being around men who make me feel like my slip is torn and showing.

Ping to your post. It’s the polite thing to do when talking about someone, especially the founder of the site.

If you honestly want answers, don’t go around freepmailing people. Post it on the big board.

I laugh when I hear Fred supporters talking about “cult leaders”, given the adulation for Fred on this site.

Not to mention many of the same folks who call LDS a cult also call the Church of Christ a cult.

The Presidency has visably aged almost every President. It is a relentlessly hard and demanding job, requiring stamina, emotional as well as physical strength.

“””What if Mitt can’t get his hair done every day? Can he pick out his own ties or even shave himself?”””

In an effort to counter the almost gay, boyish, metro sexual Mitt, they tried to butch him up by making a video of him jogging and sweating, lets’ just say it is less than successful. They have John Edwards and we have Mitt.

I dress up for work, church (when I do go) and to go to a nice restaurant.

However, I dress down on a bus, plane, or train. Why?

Mainly comfort. It’s uncomfortable enough to be squeezed into a seat designed for a 108 pound person, with my unmentionables smashed together painfully, in a hot, stagnant plane/train/bus for 3 hours...it’s even worse wearing a suit. :-)

*he’s the most conservative electable guy out there

Do you honestly believe that a man that

1 opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment
2 is unsure whether a border fence “of stone or mortar” is necessary
3 opposes federal tort reform
4 opposed and voted against a voluntary program to allow employers to track the legality of their employees
5 voted against increasing fines on businesses who hire illegal aliens
6 voted against a bill that would have denied illegal immigrants the right to federal benefits outside of emergency medical care

is the most conservative in this race? How? And why?

I don’t think “Metro” when I see Mitt. I think “harem of estheticians.” More like the King of Siam, holding the whole kingdom hostage to his appearance than like some of the politicians in my home State. I don’t think they go to the barber more than once a day.

Didn’t seem to be a problem back then, did it? And frankly, white gloves on occasions are pretty exquisite, don’t you think? It sure beats Britney Spears. And I say this as a 20-something.

The fact of the matter is that if you walk into a boardmeeting looking like a slouch, you lose immediate points. I guess it’s not for everyone, but I think a meticulous attention to detail is a good thing to have in a leader. I just don’t see George Washington in jeans and a t-shirt. Do you?

1. State issue (flame me, but it is)
2. A sore point, but he supports the idea that if we don’t give them a reason they won’t stay here
3. Federalism issue again
4-6 not my favorite vote but do we know the story?

Hunter’s not going to win. Tancredo’s not going to win. L. Ron Paul’s not going to win.

And Fred’s light-years ahead of Mitt, McCain, or Rudy on all the above issues. So there you have it. The most conservative ELECTABLE guy in the race.

I appreciate your civility. While I agree with some of your points, didn’t he support some senate bills that included gun bans & confiscations and is all forgiven for the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill?

Do all of the Christian churches from Catholic to Southern Baptists call the Church of Christ a cult?

An Ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the person", "argument against the man") consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to an irrelevant characteristic about the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. It is most commonly used to refer specifically to the ad hominem abusive, or argumentum ad personam, which consists of criticizing or personally attacking an argument's proponent in an attempt to discredit that argument.

I guess if you can't hack refuting a single iota of anything I posted, you can resort to a childlike ad hominem, though it it is a violation of the FR rules. Or don't the FR rules against personal attacks apply to Thompson supporters?

I agree, and I knew that metro sexual just wasn’t quite right but it was as close as I could get, your description is much better.

Give us an old, crippled, diseased candidate that looks like he’s been exhumed WHO BELIEVES AND ACTS RIGHT about what the United States is and ought to be. I will take him or her any day over the media beauties and darlings.

We can risk Mr. Thompson’s health conditions. Watch him live 25 more years!

Take your definition of ad hominem and apply it to your description of Fred Thompson's wife.

Your desperation over poor Willard has driven you to the bottom, you have become scum, just like the creeps at the New York Times, du.com, dailykos and the recent bannees from Wankerville.

Lovely company you keep for yourself. You're no different than someone who makes cracks about Willard's "magic underwear." After all, the media will do it, so why don't we?

I don't want to live in the media sewer, you can have my seat. I won't have any damned j-school scum defining my personal morality.

Oh, and the characteristic of yours that I have attacked is completely relevant to this discussion.

Seriously, white gloves? I’m half handicapped for a couple of days after I paint my nails. Why not bind my feet and put me in a hobble skirt, while you’re at it?

I believe in proper attire. Read “Dressing for Success” in the ‘70’s. Even wear hose more than most South Texas women and prefer skirts to pants of any kind. I’m even married to a bit of a peacock.

However, there are extremes in grooming. The Governor appears to have gone overboard with the creases, combs, tanning products and lacquer. He doesn’t want our first and last impression to be his appearance and how much maintenance he must take. He’s selling himself as the next leader of the free world. We need to see that he can take care of business, not himself.
