I don’t have a list of dogs to ban, except for pit bulls. But I do think that if you ban pit bulls because they are dangerous, then it makes sense to look at the stats on some of the other dangerous breeds as well.

What it all comes down to is that the authorities would have a legal basis to take your dog if they thought that it was part pit bull. Are you a conservative?

Brilliant, thank you for your post. I know that these pit bull threads can get a bit heated at times.

I’m obviously very much against breed-specific legislation (BSL).

I know that Pit Bulls currently have a pretty bad reputation. Well, Dobermans had a pretty bad reputation back in the 1970s. I remember hearing that Dobermans were vicious by nature and unpredictable “killing machines”. There was even a wives’ tale that a dobie’s brain grew too large for its skull and essentially made the dog crazy. What happened with this breed? Why are they not in the news anymore? Were they truly dangerous by nature, or were they a popular dog to be owned by irresponsible people who got them because they looked scary?

Yup. I had a friend in Jackson, MS, who had a beautiful pit bull. “So gentle, and sweet.” He would not EVER, however, allow his daughter, aged 6 at the time, around the dog. The dog got out of the fence one morning and we all searched until the wee hours of the morning for the dog because he was scared almost to death that the sweet thang would get hold of someone.

Got to say, though, I love animals and don’t know that I would put them to death. Might be they all be fixed and no more breeding until they’re gone, though.

The owners might be irresponsible, but that is in my view all the more reason to ban them. In this case the owner apparently had 10 of them. At what point do we say “To hell with the excuses, if they won’t control them, then we will.”

The pit bull is the biggest offender. I’ve got a lab, have had labs for 20 years. Some people think labs are dangerous. Some insurance companies charge higher premiums for dangerous breeds. I’ve never had a problem with any of my labs, even around small children. Never even had one become aggressive or bite anyone even once—even playful bites.

No insurance company has tried to charge me more because I have a lab. If I had a pit bull, I’m sure they would.

Of course, any breed can be made mean, but pit bulls who appear to be perfectly sweet end up committing these atrocities too.

You can distinguish between those breeds that are dangerous and those that aren’t. I’m not worried that the government is going to ban labs just because they might ban pit bulls. We’re not dealing with a slippery slope situation here.

Dobermans and mastiffs, even Great Danes and German shepherds have been criticized as being too dangerous at one time or another. But they all pale in comparison to the pit bulls.

It’s just a judgment call. Right now, we have a mentality that anything goes. Punishing the irresponsible owner doesn’t seem to work for pit bulls. Frankly, most of these “irresponsible owners” are good people who mean no harm. They are just irresponsible, and are themselves shocked at what their own animals do. In many cases, you can’t even identify the owner because the dog is a stray. You would have fewer instances like that if the breed were banned.

No one is going to want to ban all dogs. Responsible owners can always find another breed they like if you ban one or two. There are a lot to choose from. It’s generally the irresponsible owner who insists on having the dangerous breed.

It has been claimed that there were some NAZI's with a conscience who recoiled at gassing too many Jews. Nearly any other breed could do the "job".

The only question is when will the rescuer pictured become the attacker....and need its victim rescued.

Pit bulls have a long history as a working dog and regularly pass dog temperment tests better than some other breeds. Just being a pit bull doesn't make the dog a ticking time bomb or a killing machine.

The dogs shown in the pictures are good examples of their type and are doing good for society. Pit bulls also serve as certified therapy dogs and police dogs.

If it’s all the same to you, I’ll refrain from letting my child spend alone time with a muslim, a demoncrat, Larry Craig or a Pit Bull of your choice.

Don’t buy it from me, consult any military or police dog handler and ask why not pit bulls.

Here are some police dog handlers with their pit bulls.

Hey, dad... might there be a single term for all those folk? LIke 'A$$HOLES'

. . .who let the owner have that many big, violent dogs?

If someone hasn't said so already, I don't think pit bulls are very big. That said, in this case they preyed on people unable to fight them off, so they can be bad.

All I can say is, if any of those critters comes at me to take my life, they will be hurtin' units by the time I am gone. Whatever means is at hand to maim and kill those dogs I will use without mercy.

The dog was put to Thursday afternoon while relatives grieved for the infant.

Grammar leaves me wondering: Should we breathe a sigh of relief or be on the lookout?

all the Dogs put to sleep.

I’m sick of this Pit Bull Crap.

The answer is: the people that own pit bulls have a low self image and most are insecure about life. The killer dog makes them “somebody” in their mind. The dog gives them the macho that they lack themselves.

I hope that you don't think that of all pit bull owners.

What about the people who like the American Pit Bull Terrier's breed characteristics?

I happen to like pit bulls. I like the way that they look and plan to get a puppy soon. I fully intend to properly train and socialize my dog and certainly don't want it to be viewed as a "killer", or "tough guy dog". In fact, I despise the scumbags who get pit bulls (or any dog) for that reason.

What a little cutie.
