Belichick Fined; Pats Lose Pick
ESPN ^ | 09/13/07

Posted on 09/13/2007 5:45:28 PM PDT by misterrob

Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

Belicheat got off lightly. He really should have been served with a suspension, and the Patriots should have been docked both first round draft picks.

Mike Martz’s ego is such that he may mutiny in Detroit to become the head coach by week six.

And I really hate how he’s described as an offensive guru. “Throw on every down” is not a stroke of genius. “Don’t let the running back actually run the ball” is not crafty.

4) Belichick has never lost to a QB twice in the same season. Remember that stat? Sure , after he loses the first time, he studies their signals after video taping the coach and knows what defenses to call the 2nd time around.

UUUHHHH you might want to run this by Peyton Manning.

The Fins purchased audio tapes of Brady's audibles then beat the Pats 21-0 no outrage or complaints from the pats. Shanihan bragged about having a guy with Binoculars who would decode the other teams sigtnal by halftime this was in 2002. THe srticle is on ESPN.go.com the writer (who is currently ripping BB) marveled at how smart Shanny was.

Then there is the photo showing a guy with a Jets polo shirt on the sidelines with a video camera.

Everyone knows every team does this, but his protege, Manginius, didn't have the manhood to call and say, "We know you're doing it. Cut it out!" No, the fairy had to call the hall monitor.

Off the bat, I don't think Mangini ratted out Belicheck after the game started, I think he told the NFL about it before hand, and they simply waited and then busted the guy.

Kind of like a sting, you just have to wonder what kind of "genius" wouldn't realize his own former coordinator was going to set him up for something sooner or later.

2nd, no, not every other team does it, in fact, I doubt you'd find more then one or 2 teams.......if you could find them (I have suspicions on 2 teams),.

BB is not going to have anyone on tape, if he did, he would have pulled a power play, the fact that he is getting the max fine and giving up minimum one high draft pick, possibly (but not likely) 2, means they had him dead in the water, and he didn't have diddly.

The media wanted to 'lynch' BB. They hate him bercause he ignores them and they can't stand it.

SO does everyone here in Cleveland. He was such a polarizing person here back in the 90's before the NFL orchestrated the bullsh*t move to B-more. Plus he treated Bernie Kosar like a 3rd rate player...I can honestly say I have not spent $1 on any NFL merchandise since they left or tickets for that matter.

You know I can’t honestly argue with you...as a Patriot fan I am disappointed and really pissed off.
BB was told not to do this and he goes ahead and does it in the first game, should have been suspended 3 games for blatantly breaking the rules...SOB.
I don’t like this at all...it does taint the team for me,rightly or wrongly.

Teams are that stupid that they always use the same signals? They deserve to lose.

Big deal... part of the game...

Actually it's not, the rules are agreed to before the start of any game, without which the true idea of a game does not exist.

Now we can debate whether this rule should exist. But at the time of the game it was against the rules, and therefore should not be and isn't a part of the game.

I remember that, funny side story, the coach of the Dolphins was Nick Saban......who is a close friend of BillBelichick, one story that made the rounds was that Belichick gave him the idea. The NFL didn't fine or do anything to the dolphins because there was nothing in the rule book prohibitting it, and the dolphins went through proper channels (the NFL was ticked it off at the broadcasters though, and they got it).

Shanny boy was full of crap, no different then when John Madden and Al Davis were spreading stories and rumors that they were bugging locker rooms. It wasn't true, but it screwed with coaches heads.

All the teams do it, but most are smarter at it than the Pats.

Not to mention the allegations that the Patriots interior "D" linemen wear microphones to record the opposition audibles.

Replay the tape, match the play with the audible called and never get fooled on 3rd and 4 again.

There have been questions about what the pats have done for years now. Brady somehow showed up out of nowhere and needed no learning curve. He just comes out as one of the 2 best in the league right off the bat. This is b.s. folks last year Green Bay caught them with a camera on Nov. 19th. This isn’t something new and I bet anytime it was a key game they cheated. It really does make sense that they wouldn’t do it evey game or it would be noticeable but, there are “have-to” win games and it appears that the Pats made sure they won those. It’s a farce and everything Brady and Billicheat have done is going to have an * next to it as it should.
