He just wants us to remember it more in the spirit of our own positive action, and on our own terms.

Moral relativism and situational ethics. Do what YOU think is right not what other people tell you is right.

I think the article makes good points.

And as for Pearl Harbor - there are no huge ceremonies in every city. It’s been 60+ years.

Things just pass over time.

The author would probably have no problem with the endless Katrina coverage year after year, however.

So why mark the second anniversary of Katrina?

Stop commemorating the 1960s. JFK assassination, the Summer of Love, Chicago/Paris/Prague 1968...

Let it go. Read the article and understand the points.

It’s more a conservative perspective.

And the comparisons to other FEW ceremonies and almost NO “news” articles on anniversay or this or that, about Pearl Harbor, WWI generally or The RevWar generally are none. The point is, they are FEW and small as a rule, and there is virtually no print or TV coverage of them. Time has passed and society doesn’t make a big deal of them.

Yes we remember, tokenly at least, but not on the scale currently afforded 9/11.

When viewed rationally and soberly, his points make some sense.

Thanks to those of you who have sent me e-mails.

I’m kind of amazed by how many of those posting in this thread are under the impression that I want us to forget 9/11.

I just don’t think this particular way of remembering serves us very well.

I liked your strong finish:

September 11, 2001 was a pivotal day in our nation’s history. But it’s worth remembering that we did not attack Afghanistan until nearly a month later, as President Bush vowed that our action would occur at the hour of our choosing, not the enemy’s.

Correct. The enemy chose to make September 11 an important day. We should choose to restore it to ordinary status, and recall their actions in the context of our campaign to destroy them. Next September 11, let’s just have a normal day. And instead of remembering 9/11 by letting them make us cry, let’s remember it while we create for the enemy its own days that will live in infamy.

Lots of them.

Maybe we should add a little special zing to our operations next 11 September and every 11 September until the Islamofascist bast**ds roll dead out. Give them a reason to dread the coming of the anniversary day, not celebrate it. Yeah, I like that.

Welcome to Free Republic.

Thank you!

I think you caught the spirit of the column in full. And I appreciate the welcome.

I’m with you.

December 7th is remembered as the day the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor without provocation nor a declaration of war.

Sept. 11th is being remembered as “a tragedy,” like a bridge collapse or a mine disaster, that sort of thing, ignoring the fact that a bunch of muslim freakzoids ATTACKED US!

If 9-11 is going to be “commemorated” in this way, count me out.

I like the French approach to their loss of the Alsace-Lorraine (sp?): “Always remember it, but never speak of it.”

I listened to phone calls on talk radio on 9/11.

DNA is STILL being matched.

Over 29000 separate body parts have been found and tagged.

At one time, Air Force One was the only plane in the air, and escorted by 4 jets.

One guy described how his brother was right out front of the WTC in a cab. Fire from the fuel dropped on it. The guy doesn’t know how he got away.

One person described how small airports made room for big jets.

One guy was stuck in Hawaii on business. (rough)

One guy, his wife and child escaped across the river on a small ferry. They WATCHED ‘hundreds’ of people jumping.

As for Pearl, if you haven’t seen the official film, find it. The roar and reverberation from the Arizona blast brings grown males to tears. Even foreigners are quiet at the monument. Every American should see that monument. In the previous generation, many people refused to buy Japanese after WWII until the day they died.
